    Smile Engine conversion help

    Hi All ,
I was looking to gain some help regarding an engine transplant , we have a 2013 defender 130 that had only 2300 kms until unfortunately we rolled over onto one side to cut a long story short we have a complete car with only shell damage and as far as we are told its a write off ( insurance not covering it .... Let's not go down that road as it's been a year of hell with them and lawyers) however without going into too much detail would it be worth transplanting that motor into a older Landy as a second track chomper and how difficult would it be ?or just selling bits off and moving on
    With our new one ?
    Any suggestions ?
    Cheers

If its only body damage, its probably easier to replace the body. Lots of stuff interchanges or can be made to with little mods.

Is the chassis ok, running gear ok etc?...

All your parts are new, id rather a old body on a new vehicle than a new engine in a old vehicle

Have a look in the markets here.
There was a registered 130 with a reasonable shell but 400k on the clock there for $5000.
Might be worth swopping the good bits (drive train, seats etc) from yours onto that one and parting out the rest.

Thanks for the reply guys , all the running gear seems fine but we are getting the chassis assessed just to make sure it's not bent in any way !also she does not start not sure if it has anything to do with the anti inertia switch ??

The big IF is if the chassis is ok?
You could do a complete swap where you get an old rusted 130 or 110 and get the old vehicles chassis number put on its replacement (your 130's written off donor.). Then use the bulkhead and everything else ok from your "written off "puma to make the tdi, td5, county your half price replacement. As a bonus you would get a rear Salisbury to rebuild as a stronger replacement to the rear rover p38 axle.
Mulgo and Dungog motors have done interesting things with 130 chassis. Mulgo made an xxl wagon and Dungog made a 6 door with a bobtailed 110 body and a small tray.

If insurance aren't covering it, then it's not theirs to write-off. How much actual damage?

I wouldn't look at swapping the engine unless it's several major components that need scrapped.

I can't understand the issue with P38 diffs in Defenders! Sorry for the hijack!

I abuse my P38 very regularly, and it's now 15yrs old, still running original axles and front diff centre (I have a locker in the rear so that's not original).

You get your 24 splines still and 4pin centres! How can a vehicle that's 15yrs old and used too often off-road weighing 400kg more than a Defender unladen not destroy diffs, but a Defender kills them?

    Cheers

Transplanting the engine/transmission - assuming into an older vehicle would require a fair amount of work , engine & gearbox mounts would need transplanting, perhaps radiator mounts. Also the bonnet with its bump would need to be used - or buy a new one. Then that would all need engineering certification as the chassis/ engine are different, especially if previously registered in Vic. The main concern is if the firewall is able to be repaired. I've brought 2 light rollover 110's back to life. Both were firewall damaged & write offs.
A body transplant on the other hand needs none of that.

They aren't really P38 diffs. They are the diffs fitted to later defenders which resemble the P38 style. They apparently have common issues which are discussed here:
