    TD5 / Xtreme traction control ?

    I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Xtreme has a few peoblems on sand, problems which can be fixed by disabling (temporarily) the traction control - or some such.

    Can anyone tell me if this is true ?

    What is the method for disabling the traction control ?

    And re-enabling it ?

    Don't know about the defender specifically, but I know a lot of TC systems suffer in the sand. I can vouch that the one in the subaru outback doesn't like it ops:

    I think that slunnie has fitted an overdide switch to his TD5 Disco II, but I'm lead to believe that pulling the fuse out works well.

    Yes the xtream does suffer in the sand not as much as most traction control systems but more so that the 300tdi's. The best way is to pull out the fuse. if you are going to go sand driving often or in the outback where you can get sand for 5k then dirt for 5k and so on it might be a good idea to tap into the wire that the fuse is on and put in a switch, even extend the wires so the switch is in the dash somwhere.

    I have fit an ETC override to disable the traction control but to be honest I never have had to use it. On relatively flat sand if you are spinning your tyre pressures need to be lowered, the bit that may trick it is ascending dunes. Lock the CDL on it and that stops the front tramping as due to weight shift which triggers the ETC. Seriously though, if the ETC is hitting the brakes on you then its all about traction rather than the ETC itself - mine hardly triggers and the ETC override has been a waste of effort.

    As a guide, with radials I run 20psi Simpson, 25psi Fraser and about 12psi Stockton. No dramas.

    G'day Vlad. To disable the TC on my Extreme I pull the fuse on the ABS.(Thats what runs the TC) You can't forget you've done it as you end up with the dash lit up like a christmas tree.
    I intend installing an interupter switch once the warranty expires.
    But untill then it's no biggie lifting the seat whilst the Staun's are doing the job on the tyre pressures.

    In heavy sand and when trying to keep momentum up, going up sand hills. I think it's more of a hinderance than a help. The TC works by braking the wheel thats spinning, and braking's last thing you want in heavy sand. Or at least that's what I was always told
    But going up rutted tracks, rocky hills ect where wheels are leaving the ground it works fantastic.

    And yes fuse box is under seat + in front of gear stick + in engine bay. A TAFE course is offered in how to locate and change the offending fuse's on Extreme's [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img] [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

    Are you trying to say that Extremes are no good :wink: Or not as good on the beach as your old clunker and new found passion for soft sand has been developed

    Even SWMBO agrees that if we had the money there'd be a TD5 'fender Xtreme sitting in the driveway with the Ute.

    This the 4th landrover I've owned over the years, starting in a SWB 76, Range Rover Vouge, 300tdi and finally this. And apart from the TC on the beach is by far the most capable, economical and alround pleasure to drive vehicle of the 4.
    The lady thinks she's Angelina Jollie when she's out in it.
    Apart from a work supplied Dunnydore for me, it's her daily driver. She was happy enough in the 300tdi just a little embaressed about the power.
    The Rangie had plenty of power.........just cost a fortune to keep running. And as my idea of the perfect holiday is getting out into the deserts. Diesel is always easier to carry, and the oilers have way better range.
