    strongest box

I met someone with a 200TDI/LT77 who claims that the LT77 is a stronger gearbox than the R380.

But I always thought the R380 was the Strongest.

So which one is the Strongest please.

    this may help

    R380 Development
The R380 was introduced in 1994 with the suffix J which was a significant improvement on the LT 77 it supercedes> Differences included a steel oil pump (as opposed to the LT 77 fibre one), an additional 2 support bearing, used on the layshaft and the mainshaft, wider gears, bigger diameter synchro rings, synchromesh on reverse and a longer mainshaft spline.
This suffix J did unfortunately have a couple of design flaws which gave the R380 some bad press, they were prone to the mainshaft shearing across the oil feed holes, the layshaft also sheared at a stress concentration behind the sandwich plate causing loss of 5th and reverse also early ones still suffered from mainshaft wear until the cross drilled transfer case gears became fitted as standard on the suffix G transfer cases.
In 1999 the suffix K was used very briefly for a few months then came the suffix L. The K and L are virtually identical, the only difference I have found is the L outer main casing has an additional strengthening rib, internals are the same. The J and K/L are very different, 2 of the bearings were substantially uprated and pinion and layshaft teeth were widened again, this results in a much stronger unit.

If they said an LT95 was stronger than the R380 they would be right.
However the LT77 is not as strong as the R380

I'd also reference the Ashcroft website in first place. You will find all information necessary there.
The later versions of the LT77 were probably comparable to the early R380, but overall, the R380 is the stronger box. But without weaknesses, though.

    LT95
    R380
    LT85
    LT77

In terms of land rover manual cog swappers that's the order I'd stick them in.
Not including the MSA/MXA boxes though, or autos.

LT95 has a good reputation for strength
LT85 would be the stronger 5 speed
    between LT77 and R380 I would say the R380, 380 for 380nm rated.

Which is stronger LT85 (lightweight) or R380?

The comments about Psimpson7 breaking his R380 in that thread....
Not that I was there but from memory of having read that thread a few times, the gearbox broke while pete was out playing....in a twin locked chipped Td5 on 35s with a passion for big rocks
I'm sure the use that Pete's 90 gets isn't exactly comparable to normal use

The LT95 is a mans transmission, the R380 a toy, the LT77 an even more insignificant toy. The LT85 is reasonable, but it too has some issues...

That MT82 seems like a good unit, use the CORRECT oil, and change at reasonable intervals and it should serve well. I am a little perplexed at the size of the Puma clutch, although NEVER have I had one slip OR heard of it (even heavily loaded chipped ones), they are a smaller diameter than the Td5 one by a long way. The clamping force must be way higher, not noticeable at the pedal I think due to the design of the slave cyl etc.
