Painting wheels

Anyone have any good tips on painting rims while the tyre is still on them? I know i can just tape up the tyre to prevent it being painted but i'm just asking on the off chance that someone may be able to save me the effort.

Hi Ty
I recently painted the rims on my 109van,took them off so I didnt get overspray on the landy(blocks under the axles or axlestands are handy)I got a lid off a 4lt icecream container and cut it to the same diameter of the rim.You can then push it between the rim and the tyre and slide it around as you are painting, much quicker and easier than masking or cleaning a messup with turps ops: ops: ops:

While we are on the subject!

How well do your painted rims stand up to the tracks.

Or do you repaint a lot?

Depends on what you use.

An epoxy should resist damage more than acrylic. Also costs a bit more.

Hi Bigbugga.
I just use Wattyl killrust. When they start looking shabby a good pressure clean and another coat is the trick.I used "Pewter" its a grey, silver always looks tacky.Last painted in july and still look "brand new"

Ty use an old paint brush and some Vaseline. Brush around the tyre then spray your paint. Wash off with some strong detergent or degreaser. Instant new rims and shiny black tyres.
I am a painter by trade, and used to do this when doing up old cars. By brushing around windows, indicators, bumpers ect saved hours in taping them up or taking them off. Cleaned off in a couple of minutes and always looked a million dollars. And I never had to worry about scratching the finish or ending up with a jar full of bit and pieces. ops: ops:

Hi there, Just a tip for painting your rims with the tyres still attached. I just did mine and all I did was wipe the tyres with vaseline and then sprayed the rims. It was an easy job to wipe the overspray off when finished.

Except when the paint is too thick and then it's out with the razor blaze. Did that trick with my chrome gutter trims on the Mazda thinking it would be quicker when I did the respray and wished I'd taped them afterwards. Paint and vaseline went hard and chipping it off slowly was they only way. Glad I'd taken everything else off though, be still at it. That's was two pack though, might be different with acrylic.

Masonary tape is the go for masking up. Use it a fair bit, about two bucks a roll so aint bad considering how much you use.

For the paper, see a printery... usually buy a 200m roll for about $30, which works out cheap when you do the comparitives.

Well that's what we use anyway.
