Dyno time in Brisbane 100Tdi, exhaust advice .

I was going to buy a year ago the exchange rate was more favorable then.

I'm not sure If I'll have to pay duty or not. It should be delivered this week so I'll let you know. It was a toss up between that and Bell auto service turbo , similar to allisport etc. Original plan was to make my own manifold, and buy a VNT but time was a problem, The guys in SA have done their home work, that's a tough driving environment over there. I think so it's should only be one day to to bolt it on at home. I've read a lot of good reports on the different websites ( 4x4 community SA ). It should go well with my APT intercooler. I'm not that unhappy with the def' 300tdi, it goes well with the APT intercooler and some pump tuning. But I figure if I buy a new turbo it will keep her up to date in terms of performance.

Also I'm helping the family budget, by buying a new turbo we don't need a new car, I'm saving $40K. Good logic yes?, my wife is still thinking about that one.:D

Simmo. Thanks for the info. Until this thread the only VNT I hd thought avialable was the Allisport one. Just did a quick cost comparison - the Allisport and Mad Man both have all the hoses and bits included, the Bell Auto does not. They all come out to about the same price, but the Bell is worse value if you have to buy the ancilliaries on top. Exchange rate right now isn't so good with the Rand - their quoted price of 20K Rand is $2064 today - you got a good rate.

You have sound reasoning for doing the work, just need to put the funds aside to do my own at some point, definitely on the wish list.

Has anyone ever sourced one of these set ups or made one from local parts?

I believe that an easily fitted compound turbo setup will outperform a VNT in all situations. But it may be a while before I get to the chance to try. My 300tdi isn't road legal at the moment but all calculations are looking good and fitment can be a bolt-on.

Thanks for the info. Followed the thread whie it was up earlier until it got more technical than I could deal with. Doesn't look that easy to me (still too much petrol in my head I think) - lot of complex info. Only the bit relating to the TD04 Turbo seemed to make any sense, and sounds OK. Don't have the knowledge or the potential down time to experiment too much. Just going to have to save the money I think.

The Mad Dog or Mad Man, VNT kit has arrived at my house from south Africa, delivered yesterday. And I missed out on the arse r..ing action of tax and duty so that's good the budget is hanging in there. I haven't opened it yet, I'm a few weeks away from getting back. I almost have a D-2 transfer case on the way for $550 plus freight from Victoria. expense so far about $ 2900. ( Dam that's more than my O&M budget for the last 3 years :D )

300Tdi Defender uses a straight through muffler standard, no baffles. (The '98 version I pulled off many years ago used a perforated centre tube)

Thanks Rick, I'm not sure what size the exhaust is now. I did a fair amount of research and while bigger is best, 3" exhausts are expensive and the routing is difficult because of the big pipe bend radius etc. Most of the forums agree up to 200 HP 2.5 " is fine.

My plan is to get a new 2 &1/2" mandrel bent aluminised steel down pipe from the turbo to the first muffler, if possible a big one that's straight through. then continue with 2.5" all the way to the tail muffler and again use a new tail muffler 2.5". I'm not going to use anything exotic, just plain mufflers for diesel engine as big as I can. On a diesel i think to large extent SS is wasted money, my exhaust pipe is original and has done 200,000 kms and 19 years old. That's says something for land rovers OEM exhaust. I f i get ten years & 100,000 kms out of my next exhaust I won't complain.
I'll probably get Lukey mufflers or some other good quality aussie muffler brand.

3" fits fine, but 2.5" is more than enough on a 90 or even a 110.
I think a 130 starts to generate too much duct friction, (back pressure) so a 2.75" (minimum) pipe works better. Just a gut feeling, kind you.

The stock system is a mandrel bent 60mm/2-3/8" pipe.

Definitely use a mufler and resonator, although the drone and noise is far worse with a 3" system.
