Bad Fuel

Shell it definatly one of the better buel to buy, my road bike is quite sensitive to fuel quality and whenever I fill with anything but shell or mobile it runs like an absolute pig until all the fuel has been used and replaced.
Also on the filling of fuel station tankes, I once had a conversation with a owner of a service station and he said that the reason fuel is of bad quality after a tanker has just refueled is because of the height of the pickup. Apparently leagly they can only sink the pickup for the pumps to a sertin depth of the overall underground tank, leaving them with a persentige of fuel that can't be used, thhis is suposed to prevent the problem's of sucking up crud from the bottom. to get around this they put salt water in the bottom of the tank, having a lower density it sits at the bottom of the tank, raising the hight of the usable fuel level. So when a tanker rock up and fills up the under ground tank all the salt water gets mixed up with the fuel giving you a gut full of bad fuel. The owner told me that if you see a tanker at the servo don't even think about fillin up, keep drivin to the next servo.
I didn't really think much on this until a servo down home in NSW got busted for this very reason, it explained alot to why all the diesel we bought from them made our truck run like a jin wagon!

Got the best of both worlds locally the Shell is the local Coles fuel outlet and the Caltex is the local Woolies outlet.

I did a trip to central Qld January last year. I filled in Emerald at the Woolies, got to Carnarvon Gorge, Wandered around Roma for a couple of days and filled up again at the Oz Fuel just east of Plainlands. Well over 900 kays on the tank. Four people, touring gear etc, so I was well loaded up. As Bart Simpson once said "Oooooh! that's good Squishy!!!"

I have tried the fuel at the local Woolies in Acacia Ridge and I couldn't get 600 kays out of the tank. I fill at Oz Fuel or BP and regularly get 800+ out of a tank scooting to northern NSW and around town. A customer of mine is a chemist in Casino and says the shonks will blend diesel with kerosene!!

Needless to say, I won't go to any "big city" woolies fuel stops and have banned my wife from buying there as well.

As to my bike - a 900 Yamaha, if I run on Shell, either regular UL or Optimax it will drive quite normally but the engine seems to sound a bit rattley. On BP regular UL (and BP Ultimate when it is cheaper than the crown jewels...) the bike is much quieter. The trouble is though, sometimes I can't choose the brand of fuel in a remote location or small town.

It may all come out of the same refinery in each state, but someone is cooking the brew by the time it hits our tanks.

I used to work for one of the majors.

They have a "Fuels Guarantee"

If you can provide a sample of the bad fuel that you purchased they will cheerfully compensate for the fuel and any damage it might have caused or system cleaning that may be required.

Good to know if it's particulary bad :!:

So I have this correct this guarrantee will pay for any damage as a result of inadequate product.

So in the case of a petrol engine, if it grenades by result of poor fuel, from pinging or however, they'll pay the cost for the replacement of equal capacity within a reasonable timeframe? They will accept it was the fuel that caused the failure not any of the things that have been done to the motor like the modified cam, oversized turbo, increased boost pressure or any other non OEM part or specification?

Like to believe that but the things we modify would be the first things the company would lead us to believe caused the failure, not their product no matter what the truth is proven to be. Even in a standard motor they would find some reason that allows the blame to be shifted elsewhere and most likely to the OEM if there is no other avenue.

Every company has a guarrantee, gives the impression they care about customers but the reality is it means F/A when you have a problem. Been there, done that.

Well I can understand your cinicism, however I can recall several cases where large sums of money were paid to repair cars where the problem was obviously caused by contaminated fuel. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif[/img]

i had a old 77 rangie as a work car ......great car

1 day called into the local servo (Fuelzone ) in Rowville
filled the car up long rangetank 145lt
went paid for the fuel
drove down the road only to get around 300mts from servo........... :oops:
wondering what the hell was going on

next minute another car pulls up also
and another on the other side of the servo was more cars around the same distance............. :evil: :evil:

so back to the servo gave them my number and got their head office number
got on the phone told them i wasn't happy

took it to my mechanic got it all fixed cost them $3500 in total
cost me $60 to replace filters and stuff
