Series 3 questions

G'day Everyone, As i mentioned in the intro forum, i've just bought an ex-army series 3. The vehicle is completely original mechanically but has had the tarp removed and modified station wagon cab fitted, looks similar to a series 1 cab. Anyway, this vehicle was used as a farm truck for a few years and was then parked up for the last ten years, it still has the original bar tread type tyres fitted. The beast is at Narrabri at the moment and i intend going over and driving it back around xmas, this'll be a 500 km trip. I've managed to get the engine running (idles beautifully). Now for the questions! I've checked it for body rust and its clear (what steel there is) but not sure how and where to look for chassis rust? As it's been stopped for a while i'm planning to change the engine oil, air oil and fuel filters, spark plugs and grease it up proly dump the old water and fuel completely and check the brakes, anything else to consider? Spose i better pump up the tyres too Are there any problem areas (electrics for example) that i should pay particular attention too? And finally how hard are these things to get parts for?
Thanks and regards

Rust in chassis :-

front of the chassis from the nose to the engine mounts and the first cross member are all very vunerable when sitting

where any outrigger joins the chassis

rear crossmember and rear spring hanger areas

tops of the chassis under the driver ands towards rear of chassis.

rust in firewall :-

near the windscreen retainers

and behind the dash.

parts are easy to obtain .....

Take spare ignition coil with you, some hoses, some wires and check distributor/contacts. I would give it (distributor) a few drops of oil. Take your toolbox, some rope and goodluck !

Hi Old dog
If the tyres have been flat for a long period it would be worth fitting new tubes.Chances are they would be perished and with the heat build up in the tyres they could blow.
Wheel cylinders in the brakes can be pretty dodgy when parked up for a long time, they can get a bit of rust/corrosion when used they can blow the seals resulting in no brakes.Worth putting a kit thu if you can.

give the radiator a good flush & new coolant before hitting the tar

replace the emission valve diapragm - it will be brittle & will not last the distance & heat

run the motor at variable revs without load (like breaking in) to relube & give the cylinder bores & good workout thru their full range

then wait for the leaks when those lovely new lube products full of detergents & dispersants clean out around the nooks & crannies.

8O Land Rover's shouldn't leak oil !

Well they don't if you use enough sealant on everything, do repairs properly and make sure everything has a breather that has "temperature cycles".

Then what does still leak oil convert to grease.

land rovers and jaguars do not leak oil!!!
we were taught that by jra (jaguar rover australia)

what it is, is: controlled underbody lubrication

in uk where they come from it snows, they throw salt on the snow which rusts the cars that drive there....therefore they designed and fitted controlled underbody lubrication systems to their vehicles.

no joke thats what they were trying to teach us.

we told them the same system in australia (no salt) is an oil leak!!!!
