Intercooler Upgrades

gees thats $675 before frieght and taxes and trust me from expierence importing from the U.K its going to be double that landed, then its got to be fitted. there are plenty of good quality manufactures/installers here in oz. keep your money here and get it done cheaper imo. if i remember the ones they offer if you have air con don't give that much improvement. i think i will chase up the air to water system thats run inline with the existing intercooler.

Hi all, I cant find the issue around the house, its here somewhere. But 4wd monthly magazine only just ran an issue on this very topic, intercooler upgrades in disco's but they were working on TD5 engines. The business which does the work is in sydney , i will look up the issue and the name of the business, but if they can do TD5's they should be able to do TDi's, and they were getting awsome power increases, and i mean awsome. If you fork out big dollars they will do an intercooler upgrade to the biggest one they sell and also a full exhaust system include large diameter exhaust and extractors. I will look for the issue tonight when i get home, keep an eye on this space. Matt

i think its "bruce davis" , just remember the td5 is a totally different engine to the tdi and has alot more scope in the electrics for power gains, that said the basics stay the same. colder air =more oxegen

Please remember all, there's a limit to what you can get our of 2.5L and still expect it to last a reasonable time.

Yes, lots of cooler air = more oxygen and this is generally a good thing (lower EGTs). But it only equals bulk power if you add a corresponding increase in fuel (and hence higher EGTs again). And you must also be adding higher cylinder pressures (otherwise there's not any greater torque being applied to the crankshaft and hence no increase in power) and, if you're efficiently combusting more fuel, there's more waste heat to get rid of via the cooling system, which now has a bl**dy great intercooler pre-heating the air into it.

I'm not saying don't do it but just keep in mind, "there's no such thing as a free lunch" and, as well as spending the bucks on power-up devices, please spend a little on good instruments so that you know what's going on in there (mine or someone else's, I don't mind).

Another good way to get more power from an engine at a reasonable price, and reduce fuel consumption is to add a set of extractors and a free flowing exhaust, there is no point working out ways to get air in etc if it cant get out, a better breathing engine is a healthier more efficient engine. The whole extractor thing is not only confined to nig powerful V8 holdens and fords, the same principle applies to all engines, on the other hand to big is bad there has to be a compromise, but slightly bigger than standard will offer gains. Its not quite related to intercooler upgrades but a power increase is a power increase. Its an option.

I remember Defute has an increased capacity / efficiency intercooler - think he got it built in Melbourne.

A custom set of steampipe manifold(s), as I'm not aware of any "off-the-shelf" ones, are quite expensive for the gain as most of the restriction is after the turbo and is most prevelent on internal wastegate systems due to turbulence.

Though NOS makes an excellent intermittent "intercooler" as well if you want to go that way.
