Sourcing Tools

I am wanting to get a half-decent set of ring/open ended spanners for my workshop (which is otherwise sparesly tooled ).

I have seen a big set in 'Super-Cheap' for $90 but I am not sure whether it might be false economy. I got a socket set from there (or somewhere similar) and it's as loose as a ***** in a shirtsleeve.

Can anyone suggest a good place to buy such tools, good brand, especially if at a reasonable price.

Any advice (ahem, relevant advice) aprreciated. Cheers.

Local hardware etc seems to sell spanners singly - very expensie way to buy a whole kit. Where's a good place top buy these things ?

Glenfords Trade Tools ?

Kingchrome are widely available, are at the better end of the market and have a lifetime warranty. That means that you can return anything broken in exchange for a new one at such conveniently located places as Bunnings or Bursons.

Otherwise try ebay or the trading post.

I've had a couple of ETC (Eastern Tool Company) sets (socket set and open-enders) for many years. Not professional standard but good 'home mechanic' quality and reasonable price. That said, I haven't seen any new ETC stuff recently. The Supercheap STG (Super Tool Gold) range looks quite well made but I don't own any. Repco brand tools are very good but not cheap.

Vlad I have a set of Metrench spanners they range from 8-23mm and they suit 4 different nut types , they come with a life time warrenty and I have not had any problems yet ( even hitting them with the hammer does'nt hurt them )

They are dear at $200 for that set and they are availible from any good tool shop

Don't know if you have any harris scarfe stores up your way, but they often have sidcrpme tools at excellent prices. It's just always when I don't have the cash

Supercheap tools are evil. I've snapped 2 sockets from my socket set already and my brother has broken the open end of 3 ring spanners from superjunk

I have a set of Repco 8-19mm ring/openender spanners and a set of Imp/Met Genius Impact Sockets. Each set cost me around $120 but after 7 years of abuse and ill treatment they are in top nick and haven't even looked like wearing. I have also purchased some of the good quality racheting spanners but find that to include the racheting mechanism the head is quite large and can stop it getting into tight spots. I would definately recommend a high initial outlay to get a decent set of tools. Despite what all the 4wd magazines say are the top accessories for your car not one mentions tools- no use having a million dollars worth vehicle and accessories that can climb a cliff if you can't fix the one hose or bolt that brings it to a halt. Hope this helps,
Pullsy

I hate shopping except when it comes to Hardware and Tools.

My last major acquisition was a Sidchrome combination Socket and Spanner set (on special for $196 save $50).

On line looks interesting but I haven't tried this method yet:

Vlad, stay away from Super Cheap sets, go for one of the decent brands i.e Sydchrome or Kincrome. As an alternative try these guys www.totaltools.com.au They sell their own brand of tools but are exactly the same as sydchrome .. (basically rebadged sydchrome from the same factory) They also offer a lifetime warranty and normally comes in a bit cheaper then the sydchrome or kincrome tools.
