I have no converter on my series one disco and still only get 20l/100km.
Hi guys,
As the happy owner of a V8 series 2 Disco ... I love my Landy.. ..
...However I am not so thrilled with what George W and co have achieved with world oil prices... 8O
... in short like most of us... I seem to be hemorrhaging at the Wallet.. :? .
A mate of mine pointed out the other day that some time back he replaced the Cat converter on his series 1 imported Disco ( Pommy model - with the high comp V8 8) )... he pulled out the cat and replaced it with straight through pipe.... and got a significant increase in economy!
I know I am treading a thin line with the authorities on what you can and can't do.... but I am considering it....
Anyone tried... had any results or got any good reasons why I should tear this one up before I start??
... would appreciate some input from some of you Land Rover wizards out there....
Mark

Be aware that with out the cats you might have some leagle problems,
State you live in might make a diference.
There are two types of people in this world, good and bad. The good sleep better, but the bad seem to enjoy the waking hours
Didn't think removing the cat converters would do that much for fuel economy. Might make the exhaust note a little different or get you pinged by a fussy mechanic on the annual pink slip if it's not on there. Could try a complete aftermarket exhaust system, might do something for economy.
FI ? Most FI computers have a lean cruise mode where fuel mixture is brought right back to "just enough" to keep it going to maximise fuel economy when, strangely, you're cruising. Don't know if that can be improved by a chip or needs one of those interceptor modules like tunit.
There's mixed opinions on "hiclone" that is supposed to improve fuel efficiency. 'nother option you could try.
Changing your exhaust will help and make your engine breath better but you will not notice it at all and I would'nt advise you doing so but then again it would make it sound like a V8 should 8)

I know a bloke - who had a 91 Falcon ute - the thing was a mad fuel guzzler, anuhow one day hes driving along and Bang - the cat blew, now the vehicle was registered in Vic where its one roadworthy per life of vehicle - untill ya sell it, so this bloke i Knew bought an engine pipe from an XC falcon and the middle pipe from an XD (No Cat). He matched it up to the tail pipe he had.
The fuel economy lifted from 5-6 Km per litre to about 10 km per litre - I was wrapped .... I mean he was wrapped.
He did have trouble convincing the exhaust bloke to seel him the pipes - as he didnt want to be involved in removing the cat..... so he ws told the vehicle was for farm use only and wasnt registered in that state and would never see the road.... part right.
Mate I recon that if you dont live in NSW - ar any other state where you are subjected to revinue rasing "pink slip" type rego inspections every year do it.
BUT beware that the fine for removing the cat is in the vicinity of thousands of dollars as its an EPA matter

Exhaust shops go down BIGTIME for messing with cats.
The easyest way to inprove the flow is to drop the header pipe and puch the insides out of the cat with a steel rod or something similar.Visually its still intact but internally its barren.BUT if they stick a tube up its bum and test the exhaust gas,you will be up for a new pussy.

Thanks guys... looks like a mixed batch... I think I'll sit on it a while ... taking a closer look... the existing Cats are in a pretty awkward place to swap them to see.
I had a 5 litre commdore ( It's OK I got over it )... we pulled the Cat off that.. and I got a 35% increase in economy... and more power!... that was one of the reasons my mates idea sounded interesting..
.. Adam you raise a good point - If I get it to sound like a real V8 .... I might like the noise too much -- and Halve my economy 8O
think I'll ponder other options....

Here's another idea for improving power & economy through exhaust mods that does not involve the cat.
Why not remove the muffler and replace it with a Supertrapp muffler. Mr Moller, the inventor of the sky car ( http://www.moller.com/ ) invented this effective, tunable, lightweight muffler. Now marketed by Supertrapp ( http://www.supertrapp.com/ ).
The muffler fits onto end of the exhaust pipe. It consists of a series of alum. discs with a hole through the centre of each. The end disc can be a blank, or one with a hole (depending on degree of muffle you require). The discs are wider on the outside edge which creates a negative pressure and helps scavange the gas out. In effect the exhaust is diffused out at 360deg instead of being shot out the end of the pipe. Spreading the noise (and gas) out like this make the car quieter, but does not have the restrictions of a regular muffler. (all this is technically explained on the website).
Being a cheap skate, I was thinking of making my own. Today I got a piece of pipe from the exhaust shop to slide over my tail pipe. I'll cut some alum discs with a large hole saw out of chequer plate. I feel the chequer plate will hold its shape and if used facing the pipe, may deflect some noise (gas) in a non linear (and therefore quieter) stream.I don't have the technology to taper the edges out, but I thought that by drilling a differant pattern of holes in the middle of the discs, that would encourage the gas to travel side ways and find it's own way out

. I plan to use some long stainless bolts (say 3) and place a spacer (3-4 washers) between each disc, then attach my disc cluster to the small section of pipe I got, and slide that over the exhaust and see what happens.
Day light savings is starting soon, so I may have a little more time for such tinkering. But before I start on that I have to build a deck. But if anyone wants to build one before me, then let me know if it works. If you're not a cheap skate (fiscal featherweight) then why not import a SUV version and tell us how it works.
