    power through exhaust mods to 200tdi Disco

    spotted coincidental post below as I logged on to post this...but my query is a bit different. Unlike many Jap cars, the standard exhausts on LRs seem quite free-flowing. I'm just wondering if cutting off the pipe before the second muffler on a 200tdi will make any difference - or is this effectively just a straight-through resonator box to reduce exhaust note? What about the main muffler - it looks fairly large but I guess it depends how restrictive the internals are. Also, do these mufflers get clogged up with diesel soot? Would there be any benefit in fitting a straight through after-market muffler? The pipe itself seems to be a reasonable diameter so just looking at muffler mods...

    The first muffler ( the big one ) is not that free flowing I had this talk with a local exhaust maker over here and all he said was to change the centre muffler as on Landrovers this will not flow good enough fo the power required

    I've also heard that removing the large front muffler gives a useful improvement. Some mobs in the UK sell a straight pipe section to replace this muffler for Td5s, without excessive noise. Here you'll need to get a section made up by an exhaust fitter.

    I intend to try it soon with my 300tdi. I'm planning to spend a few extra bucks getting a second flange fitted where the muffler outlet pipe is cut, so I can put the original back in if it's too noisy.

    I doubt a more free-flowing exhaust will improve outright power very much (but there's plenty of info available on fuel pump adjustments to do this). The best I think you can expect is quicker spooling-up of the turbo at slightly lower rpm and hence a bit much punch at low rpm. But then again, it might 'sound' more powerful...

    i do know that putting header tape on the exhaust from the expansion joint to the muffler makes the vehicle a whole lot quieter... about the first thing i did on my disco when i got it as it was so sucessful on the swb [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif[/img]

    Good stuff that exhaust wrap, cuts the heat down in the engine bay as well as softening the primaries 'ticking' with aftermarket exhausts.

    Primaries are the pipes that come off the block before the first junction (collector). They tick because of the exhaust pulses. Don't get that in cast manifolds because of a range of reasons. Distinct noise if you hear it.

    Hi Feral Disco
    The best muffler you have is bolted to the exhaust manifold-the turbo.Go with a 3 inch "dump pipe" from the turbo as far as a straight exhaust allows,usually before the rear axle,then drop down to 2 1/2 or 2 1/4 inch with a good quality straight thru "Turbo" muffler at the rearmost available position.
    Your turbo will spool up heaps quicker due to the lack of back pressure and you will get a healthy growl out the back without too much excessive noise.

    It makes a big difference,especially from the traffic lights,but also when changing down to overtake a roadtrain.

    but will having an exhaust system which flows too freely cause any probs apart from a bit of noise - e.g. would there be a problem just cutting out main muffler all together, so that your only form of muffling (apart from turbo) is resonator box at the end?
