Hmm - he got better fuel consumption not worse - 9l/100km to 7l/100km which is an improvement.
He is saying 7 km per ltr, not 7 ltr per 100km.
Well it's a 4.6V8 to start. I don't know, last thing to do is swap ECU after that buy shares in BP

I understand that in a diesel you don't particularly get better fuel economy on the highway and given the disco 1 size thats understandable, plus I have heard the mileage between highway and town doesn't vary as much with diesel as it does petrol.
But then with last nights off road adventure I would have expected it to go up to high 9 or even 10 litres however it ended up going down and considering how much mud we had to push through and with some very steep slow climbs it seems strange to have gone down.
I'm just trying to understand why so as to make trip planning in the future easier as not much worse than having to cut your trip short due to not allowing enough fuel
I suspect it will end the end be a measuring issue however a 300tdi will be out of its comfort zone at freeway speeds - will be on the downward side of the power curve and likely to be close or if not on the downward side of the torque curve.
Depending on the terrain and if not a lot of gunning was required, when offroad the engine may very well be operating at its optimum toque particularly if you are going slow and just chugging along.
Sand work and very steep climbs will definitely use more fuel but more moderate 4wding at slower 30kph type speeds may very well give better fuel consumption.
All I would do is take note and see if it is consistent in the future.

Best ever on mine with stock size tyres was 9.08L/100 and that was a measured economy run where we all filled from the same pump before and after.
I would guess my normal city ueage would be closer to 12L/100 but that is on 32"tyres and 3" lift .
Oddly enough my last trip away with the AULRO group to Avoca i got really good mileage coming home @ 110KPH towing a camper trailer at about 600kg.
