Gordo,
Welcome to the forum and I believe you 97 should have had remote access from the factory. Did you get a remote keyfob with the car ?
hi guys, this post is sort of an introduction and question. I recently purchased a 97 d1 v8 auto. love the car. wife tows her horse float with it. my question is whether it has remote central locking fitted. the key opens and locks all the doors but I was wondering if was supposed to come with a remote. were they fitted as standard. the car is a pretty base model I think, no air bag or abs etc.
thanx Gordo
Gordo,

no . just two keys. is it possible to buy a remote and get it programmed to the car?
I'm curious to know if this is possible as well.
Our '02 has central locking and unlocking with the key in the driver's door, but didn't come with a remote either. Apparently it was the TD5 Xtreme version, which I thought was supposed to have a remote.
I suspect a previous owner simply lost it (them) and never bothered to get it replaced.
I should read more...
defender and 110 extreme difference
So it might have had one, and it might not.
And I might be able to get one and program it.
Mine has remote central locking.
I think the immobiliser is related to the remote central locking, so locking it with the key may not immobilise it.
If I lock mine with the remote, and then unlock it with the key, it won't start.
I believe the remotes are rolling indefinite meaning they lock with a different combination each time, so you'll probably have to go to a dealer to replace them.
Hmm I'm interested now as I'm in a similar situation just bought 95 disco key if used in drivers door has central licking never got a remote so just assumed it didn't have one. From what people saying contacting a dealership is the only way to get a new one. Might be a hell of a lot cheaper to just use the key instead
