Off Topic: Mercruiser Starter motor - rebuild or replace?

    G'day Guys,

I know its not a Land Rover, but I get no joy from other forums!!!

I have a boat with a Mercruiser motor (its a Chevy 4 cylinder 181CID) the starter motor is looking a bit shabby, should I rebuild or replace?

If rebuild, can anyone suggest someone?

    THX in advance,

You say it "is a bit shabby". Can you tell me a bit more? If the stator is really rusty (the stator is the generally the main body of the starter motor) it may be better to replace it. If it is surface rust, disassembly and a clean up should be okay. Might need some new bushings for the armature and perhaps some new brushes as well. Normally starter motors are pretty robust and lend themselves well to a rebuild. Maybe an exchange item might be the way to go. Sorry, I can't recommend anyone who may be able to give you parts and assistance.
