Fuel Consumption

I filled the Disco on saturday after 726ks and put in 86ltrs giving us a fuel economy of 11.8l/100k thats driving to work and back.

When towing the camper it goes down to around 13l/100k to 15l/100k depending on my right foot and how hilly it is.:)

Speaking of stoichiometric ratios, does anyone recall the old Chrysler Electronic Lean Burn systems?.....they used to run all over the shop - but with figures sometimes down to as lean as 17-18:1.....it was really hard on all the H.T. leads and rubber cos of the very hig temps but gave good! fuel consumption from their 360, 340, 318 V8's and I think they may have adapted them for use in Aussie straight six "Hemis":)

Fuel consumption for 12 months running Serie11 TD5 2003 Model,
10.12Lts per 100k that is about 85% around town with work the rest off road and towing a camper Trailer. Fairly good I recone compered to a mate that has a P***o Deisel and the best he can get is around 16lt - 100k.

Series 11 TD5 2003 Disco

I got 14.81L/100kms on my Sydney to Brisbane trip. That is with roof racks, minimal air con and sitting on 100-120km/h on cruise control.

Manual 3.9 V8 Disco with some sort of John Davis chip.

I've filled it 3 times since Thursday though.

I get 6l/100km at highway cruising speed, about 9 around town and a bit under 10 towing a car trailer with a series 1 on the trailer - but the series 1 did have the windscreen folded down.

On average my 2003 Disco v8 is drinking 15litres/100km. Does go up when sports mode button is on and planting the foot at traffic lights on the Gold Coast:angel:

given the lengths of runs that I used to do Im fairly happy that my numbers are consistent enough to be accurate.

these numbers are from the north queensland region If a run both ways was less than 500km it wasnt counted. the 300kg load is approximate and is typically my normal tool box an air compressor, swag, recovery gear, fridge and either specialist tools and a genset or camping gear and the in vehicle bed. most runs were on first and second class roads.

speed control is via a stable right foot allowing the vehicle to overspeed to 110kph downhill under engine control and under speed on climbs without labouring downshifting as needed. average speed indicated is the target flat road speed

big red is a 03 plated td5 110 extreme. the only mod that might aid economy is the snorkle

with just me 300kg load, open windows 95kph average speed =9.5l/100
me wife 2t of trailer 300kg load windows up aircon cranking 95kph =11.5l/100
me wife 300kg load, aircon cranking110kph (130 if safe for overrun)=11l/100
me wife city cycle (townsville) aircon 50% of the time =10.5

Best ever run
me, 300kg load 2t trailer, no hurry, night driving windows closed, flaps open 85kph 8l/100

worst ever run.
me wife 600kg load, 3t trailer (horse float 2 horses) aircon, 110 kph midday run (42 deg) 15l/100

I love it. Big red is more economical under normal use than most any toyota 4x4 including the RAV 4 and just pips out the old mans Commodore.
