    Battery about to explode

Ive been trying to charge 2 deep cycle batteries for a week now.Yesterday they finally came up to 12V.
This morning one is blown up like a balloon, they are sealed batteries, both are at 12.7V.
Have removed the charger and jumperleads connecting the 2 batteries.
Obviously this is very danegerous, whats the best way to deal with this battery????
If left will the thing de-pressurise by itself???
Jumper leads connected to the problem battery if a load needs to be applied.

I suspect the battery now contains an explosive mix of hydrogen and oxygen. Connecting a load may cause an internal spark which in turn may start an explosive reaction.

Take care. Walk away, for now. Seek more knowledgeable advice.

    X2...

Be far away... How far? - far enough to need binoculars to inspect it...

If you're feeling brave/foolhardy, gently place a tarp over, or 'something' around to minimise the debris. Be wearing a full-face shield if you do.
Not all plastics show up on X-rays...

The valves are rubber caps/stoppers over each cell. Often they are jammed on by the lid and don't work. Can be very loud when the do finally vent any gas.
Lot of thermal mass there, will take a long while to cool down

Hi Andrew and just leave it alone.

The battery has valve release on it and any gas build-up will have already escaped BUT, because the battery has warped, caused by heat, not gas build-up, the battery could have a small amount of gas trapped inside.

If you have an old blanket, throw it over the battery to reduce the spill effect if it does go bang for any reason.

The fact that only one battery has failed is probably an indication that the stuffed battery has dropped a cell, shorting internally.

Now that you have separated the two batteries, if you measure that battery, you will probably have a voltage reading of just 10.5v.

To move/remove that battery, just make sure it is cold and the terminals are covered and all should be safe.
