    d1 timing

can anyone help me with the correct timing on a 3.9 v8. The manual states 2° btdc but I'm sure I've seen a thread on here saying some of you guys are running 8,10 or 12. my car is at 12° now andis running smoothly but using fuel st about 40 l per 100 k. would running it at 2° make my fuel consumption better?

Mine ran happily on 10 to 12 deg, it was advanced as I was dual fuel.
your doubling of the fuel usage suggests that it is running very rich, is your exhaust pipe black with soot, usually a crook MAF will cause richness.
You should use at least 20litres per 100kms, not 40litres.
Plug your spark plugs out and have a look for wetness and fouling of black carbon.

Leave the timing up around 10-12 degrees.

Apart from the MAF there's the temperature sender for engine temp to the ECU. It's at the front of the engine near cyl 1 injector with a similar plug. Test the sender with the engine hot, its resistance across the pins should be around 300 ohms.

Then check that the fuel pressure regulator isn't dribbling fuel into the inlet manifold. Pull off the vacuum hose running off the reg to the back of the manifold and check for fuel wetness. Sometimes the vac hose just falls off too, causing rich running due to higher fuel pressure.

They might have been replaced with no working second hand components?

Leaking injectors with leak fuel all the time and will cause overfueling.
If you can find some one with a working maf to borrow and see if it makes a difference, as Bee-utey said the sensor.
