    4HP22 emptied itself :(

Ok, so the auto box in the Disco dropped all it's fluid on the way home last night. First I knew of it was having coasted down a hill and trying then to accelerate up the next rise...no drive, engine revving. Coasting to a stop maybe 800m and the back door is covered in A/T fluid, so is the underside and the LHS of the engine bay.
A quick look when I got home tonight reveals a hose has separated from the pipe near the crank pulley, a few months ago the serpentine belt spat itself due to a seized idler pulley and I assume may have damaged the hose which has ultimately failed. there was no sign of a leak prior to this.

But my question is, how likely is it that the auto box is toast?
    Thanks
    Mike

Well there is one way to find out!
If it is still empty, maybe take the opportunity to drop the pan and do the filter.
It is possible to remove pan without undoing anything other than the retaining clips which are matched for corners or sides, but devilish difficult to get the new gasket to stay in place on reassembly without dropping the crossmember. Well worth it to start with.....
The filter bolts may be torx head, and if so, may very helpfully strip out on removal. In which case, hopefully vice grips or similar may get you out of trouble.
When refilling, I would drop in about half stated capacity to start with, and add as required, to get to the top mark after starting it and putting it in D a few times.
I have had similar with other cars, and never a problem. The risk of damage may be a bit self limiting when it dumps, due to losing drive almost immediately.
    Unlike transfer cases!!!

    Thanks Gunmnut
That seems to make sense - the self-limiting - and your observation on he Torx is gold!
Well need to check the hose properly and I guess I'll go from there, but at least ghats encouraging
    Cheers

I had the same thing about a year ago or so, both hoses had rubbed together put a hole in each.
Fixed hoses and refilled and hasnt had a problem since.

Join the club, my hose unscrewed itself
I got maybe 1.5L out of the pan itself.
10mm heads on the pan bolts, I put each bolt and spacer in a labelled clip-lock bag. Make sure you've got a long extension to reach up, gives the wrench space to move.
3 Torx head screws for the filter.
My magnet was pretty good for 255k, no big chunks.
Highly doubt you'll find any damage.
Fill it till it overflows, have someone jump in and start it up, put it in each gear down to 1 and back again, hold for 2 seconds in each gear, filling all the while.
Once it's overflowing again you're all good.
    Good luck

I thought the same about the damage when mine blew the hose from the pipe at the swage.
After reading many threads on this it seems the bad swage joiner is a manufacturer fault on earlier units.
If you haven't tried to drive the Disco after you stoped the chance of damage is minimal from what I've read on here.
Mine was good after new lines and a refill and quite few report the same.
    Cheers, Kyle

Yep, notorious fail point across all models, not just early ones.
If you search for my threads you'll find mine about auto cooler pipes, there are some superior alternatives to stock parts available in there.
As Alien says, as long as you stopped after you lost drive you'll be right.
I got about 500m on mine once I started noticing something wasn't quite right, it got a rev for maybe 3 seconds with no drive and then shut-down.
