Dumb ammeter question

Evenin All! I've just been working on the wiring in Olddog and it's an absolute bloody mess, but i seem to have most bits working now  I wired in an ammeter and when i checked it it reads positive when the engines running with the highbeams on, that's right isn't it?
Told you i was asking a dumb question
Thanks

Hi Bill
Sounds right, does it read discharge when you turn the motor off with the lights on????
If it reads charging when you do this you need to swap the terminals on the back of the gauge.

Might not if he's wired it into the charge wire on the alternator then it will only show alternator positive charge.

If he's wired it into the main power wire from the battery to the solenoid then yes it should show both positive and negative charge.

I removed mine as they cause fires. 8O

Thanks for that, looks like i've wired it in the wrong spot, i've got it in the main ignition switch wire from the solenoid
I read your post on the ammeter fire you had HS, mines plastic (VDO) so i'm hoping i won't suffer the same prob. ops:

Isn't wiring fun ? I had parking lights come on when the foot brake was applied and the turn signals when put in reverse when I first got mine. Nope wasn't a single filament bulb in the brake light as they do the same thing, clown before me had wires going who knows where. So a week of colour by colour following the green book, "Houston.......we have ignition". Now you know a little more about my Hellspawn.

For the ammeter, the casing was plastic on mine. It was a stupid design anyway, think it was a smiths, the bracket (that holds the gauge in the hole from the back) goes over the terminals and insulated with rubber grommets. The back of the dash is steel and negative power so the rest I've mentioned. So make absolute that the terminals are well insulated, use silecone if you have to and you shouldn't have the problem I did.

I gotta disagree with you HS, wiring is most definitely NOT fun It's been a bloody ordeal, but i think it's almost done, except now the brake lights don't work again  anyway, thanks for the tip off on the ammeter, it's designed the same as the one you discribe so i'll pull it back out and insulate it properly.
I also re-wired from the alternator to the starter solenoid and its working properly now Thanks chaps! ...........and now i'll go and try and fix those bastard stop lights once and for all
