Must have been me that was accusing you frank....
Not sure why you had to beat your chest so much when you could have just given the info straight up to help him.
Meh, some people are loud, I just carry a big stick.
They say to use a plastic scaper for everything, but its only really critical on aluminium where its easy to dig in. On the iron block, use razor blades or bits of snap off blade. Shove some bits of rag down the galleys to keep the crud out, and don't forget to tke them out. Gasket remover spray is good too, and as I said earlier, clean up with brake cleaner - it evaporates nicely. Yes your cans of air will be fine for blowing out the bolt holes.
Uninformed, no it wasn't you I was accusing it was the next post down, I figured the wording to be smartarse, I was about to reply to your post when I seen 13lud (or whatever) Quote: "Care to share details of your amazing contact with super impressive prices?"
You might not read anything into it, BUT I would not say that to a person unless I was face to face.
I have posted the details previous to this thread, I have looked up My eBay to try and find the transaction but it is no longer there, it was last year after all.
Islandnomad the head was purchased unassembled but with all new parts and gaskets/bolts, it worked out to be about $50 cheaper that from the UK and at the time a complete head/gaskets/bolts was getting very close to a $1000 in the UK, which if over that amount I would have had to pay import and other duties, plus I would have bought here in Australia even if it was dearer than the Pommie one, hope that clears it up, Regards Frank.
I made some enquiries to an agent in China whether they could source Cast Iron heads to suit the 300TDi LR engine. As I believe the warping of the alloy heads is generic, I figured a cast iron head would solve the problem of warping between 2 &3 cylinders. They got back to me and said no-one makes a cast iron head for the LR 300TDi but they could supply me with cast alloy heads for $200 each, problem was minimum purchase of 500 heads was required.
So if you can buy in bulk they are cheap as chips, how much do you reckon Turner's pay for their heads. BTW a can of CRC Gasket Stripper a razor blade scraper and a lot of patience, make sure you block the oil and cam follower holes with sponge to stop crap getting into where it shouldn't, Regards Frank.
Wasn't intended to be a smartarse comment I appolagise if you took it tht way.
Head is complete from dls in the uk Complete head
Sure probably not the same quality as some of the heads going for 3k but its what I can afford at the time and gets me back on the road or offroad again sooner.
I guess it just comes down to sourcing the best parts within your budget at the time. Sure someone who has 10k to spare is always going to have better stuff but you just gotta do the best you can.
Wow 3lud13 that is an amazing price for an assembled head out of the UK!
Is it a reconditioned LR head? Turners said that they sometimes get them and that they are quite a bit cheaper?
I just wish I had the skill, tools and workshop to do this myself, the more I read the more complex it seems, so many varying opinions, from plastic vs steel dowels to different thickness heads. One mistake and the motor's rooted. It really is a job for a skilled LR Mechanic in my opinion.
Oh I see, thanks for clearing that up Izuzurover! Didn't sound right comparing the prices I have seen. Yes the $3000 for the assembled head is for a Td5 head.
It is a new head not reconditioned.
I don't have a workshop unfortuantly just live in a unit and vehicle is sitting in my parking space not the best place to be doing work but just gotta work with what we got. As for tools it really doesn't require alot few spanners, sockets and screw drivers really torque wrench if you don't have one can be kind of expensive maybe not sure haven't bought one in forever and the degree wheel thing can just be made up at home quite easy so really most people who have tools probably have the majority of tools required.
As for skills well rebuilt a few holden 202 and 308s back when I was a kid so figure a head change on a landy can't be to much different hardest part is engine still being in a vehicle really. Plus nowdays with forums such as this and google getting extra helpful information is virtually at your fingertips.
