    Second Alternator

I want to (need to) fit a second alt to my rangie as the current one is only 40 amp.

What is the best way to wire it in?

    Cheers,
    Ash

You cannot unless it is exactly the same output with the same pulley size etc driven from teh same belt, or from a pulley exactly teh same size..

The alternative is to wire the second alternator independently to a second battery for winch and accessories. That is what I have done. You need a wire from the alternator to the battery which takes the max output of the alternator, so not as thick as a starter one.
And a second light gauge wire from the battery to the alternator switched through the ignition via a relay, with a 2watt bulb(depending on the alternator) as an exciter.

G'day Ash, maybe it would be easier to adapt up a 60 or 80 amp alternator to replace your standard one? I'd like to put one in my S3 to replace the 35 amp one.

I replaced mine with one from a VK commodore that I had reconditioned and upped to 80amps it cost me about $150.

My problem is that it's diesel so it's limited choice/expensive to change over. Esp when I have a 120amp one that is brand new sitting in the shed.

Thanks Bill, but it's $$$$ again for diesel.

Do you use dual batteries? When I had the 76' rangie, I fitted a second alternator that was connected to the second battery and ran accesories from that (spotties, stereo fridge etc). The smaller alternator ran the rangie fine without the extra's.

    Cheers

Is your problem with it being diesel due to the diesel alt having a vacuum pump????
If so you could leave it there with the wiring not connected and set up the other alt to run as normal.
    Just a thought????

He may well do, but it seems a waste of 40amps and an extra strain.
