    One of the first things to do is drop the front driveshaft and drive it in difflock(if you have one) to see if its the front or rear axle.
    Early D2s have the difflock mechanism, that can be activated by moving the selector on the side of the transfer. Don't ask me where. I think on the LH front.
    you can usually tell whether it is front or back by doing this.
    Start with the simple things first. I would suspect a universal joint in eithe r the front or rear driveshaft.

    Still thinking diff pinion something.

    However do Discos have panhards ? Maybe the diff's moving sideways under load and the tyres are rubbng on the guards ?

    Split left hand Engine mount rubber.... looked ok... bolts were tight.... but on closer inspection there was a split in the rubber!
