I was having a quick look though the haynes manual and it says to do the Hub nut up to 100nm (from memory), or should I just do it up figure tight ?

That sounds loose...... 100nm... 8O
The recommended torque for wheel nuts/lugs is 105nm and there's 5 of them !! 8O
My manual says to do the adjusting nut up to 61nm then back it off and do it up to 4nm. Put the lockwasher on then the locknut. The locknut is done up to 61nm as well.
My torque spanner won't read 4nm so I have always just done up the adjusting nut while turning the hub, till all the free play is removed from the bearing then back off about a quarter turn. I haven't had any problems doing it that way.
I got a tube spanner from FWD motors. Can't remember how much but less than $25. It is only pressed (I think) but has a 1/2 socket drive hole. It's all you will need. A fairdinkum socket that size will cost you as much as the Disco, well nearly.
Good luck
Iain
sorry meant the lockwasher and the locknut.Quote:

matt.
the hub nut is done up tight, then the hub is spun a few times to seat the bearings.
then you back it right off and do it up just enough to take out the freeplay.
try moving the hub to make sure there is no freeplay, then you put on the lock nut and that gets done up tight(not F.T. just tight) the lock tab will stop them from coming undone.
That's the right procedure.
Used 'get' people with that about what's tight and not. The hub and wheel nuts was always a good one. One nut holds the hub yet it takes five to hold the wheel on, made them think twice about it. Usually ending with a consult of a second opinion.
"Tighten until it just starts to come loose" was also another good one.
I know... I'm terrible.
Did the rear wheels yesterday, was pretty easy (2hrs the first one and 1hr the second), hopefully I did that blo  y hub nut up properly, might just check it again tonight. Will do the front on the weekend, look a little more complicated.
Thanks guys for the info....
Matt.
our favourite was: tighten it till it snaps then back it off half a turn!Quote:

as for the five wheel nuts i guess 5 small = 1 huge.
