What were the circumstances?
By inspection plate I assume you mean the big round one over the input gear. It's easy to remove the plate and the bearing race that sits behind, then pull the gear out for inspection - check the shaft with a torch. Goes back together as easily.
If the input gear looks ok then manipulate the levers and rotate both drive flanges to check that you have differentiation (should be able to rotate the drive flanges in opposite and same direction) and diff lock (both flanges will only turn in the same direction and not in opposition). Listen for any grinding noises. Check that the low, neutral and high range are working - I assume you know there is a neutral.
If detent balls are not under sufficient pressure or the wrong size from manufacturer the box can sometimes jump to neutral leaving you with no drive.
