    Cool LT95 Gear Stick Drama

    Hi All,

I am wondering if I may get some advice? I recently replaced my RRC LT95 (for the second time - long story, don't ask ). However, parts are very limited here in the Canadian badlands, and I had to take the only other box I could find.

This latter box seems to have much bigger selectors and is presumably from a Stage One, or a 101. Either way, my long throw stick (which has two flats milled onto the end of the gear stick) waddles around in this box like a spoon in a pot of porridge. In trying to remedy this problem, I have welded the end of the gear stick such that there is now a ball on the end, but there is not really enough weld on it and the stick is still sloppy.

What I would like to know is what vehicle had the LT95 fitted requiring larger selectors and a gearshift which had a larger ball on the end to suit the larger selectors, and does anyone have such a stick I could purchase off them to weld onto my shaft such that I can find gears again?

My RRC is a 1980, and both previous boxes worked fine with the gear stick from my vehicle. I do not wish to switch out the selectors (as the box is now in the rangy), and I do not mind cutting the stick in two and welding it to get the correct shape for the RRC. The gearstick I have, had a ~9/16in ball with two flats milled into it, but it is definitely a long throw (as compared to the much smaller short stick from the late 80's). However, even with the flats now made such that the ball is roughly spherical, there gear shift is still all over the place.

The photos attached are not mine, but from the internet (and do not reveal information about the gear stick!). You can see the one with tighter/narrower/ selectors is similar to the boxes I have used before, but the other one with much larger selector openings is like the one which is currently in my vehicle.

    Any advice, gang?

G'day Shedlock, That box with the larger selectors would most likely have come from an early model RR or possibly a 101 and is what is called a "long throw" box. Yes, the gearshift lever is different to the flat one like you have and has a ball on the end, but there is still a flat spot on the side that contacts the reverse selector. I have just measured one up and the ball diameter is 15mm if that helps. I can post a photo up later if you like. Unfortunately I only have 1 of these so I cannot help you out there. Got about 10 of the flat type for the later boxes but only one of the older ones. Maybe someone will have one lying around that they could send to you.

Thanks for the info, Bearman; that is exactly what I was after. Now, would you be able to measure the drop on the gearstick for me (top of the large boss to the bottom of the very small selector ball) please? Also, I would dearly like to see a photo of the part. I have looked up the part number, and I think what I need is part number 622527 (as opposed to FRC2871) -- Could you confirm this?

I have looked all over the gearbox, but I seem unable to find the gearbox number, where is it likely to be if it does not appear on the rear of the transfer casing?

However, I am confused about the purpose of the flat for the reverse gear selector. Below is a photo from the book showing two types of gear-lever. One shows the flat, the other does not. What is the purpose of the flat, and would a selector without the flat work? Here is the photo from the book:

I will get some photos and the measurements and post them up later. The number I have for the flat lever is FRC4754 but this one is different to the one in your photo. Pretty sure they are all the same length from the pivot to the bottom. The gearbox number should be on the back of the transfer case just under the filler plug.

Thanks for the info, but the number is not there - I heard rumour that the number for the early boxes is stamped on the top of the gearbox near the reverse gear switch, but I cannot see up there with the gearbox in position.

More things of interest: the flywheel plate is slightly different on this box compared to the others that I have fitted, and there is a dipstick for the gearbox (which made me think 101 or Stage 1 - but the bell housing is the same length). We were able to make the flywheel plate fit - but the holes are not in the same position all the way around.

I look forward to seeing the photos and measurements when you have a few moments.

Here's a couple of photos of the 2 gearsticks I have. They are both the same length (60-65mm approx) from pivot ball to tip. Could be that you have a box that they forgot to stamp the number on - I have one here like that but it's a later short throw box. The dipstick caper was normal on early RR boxes. The 101's have a shorter spigot shaft and bellhousing and the stage 1's have a longer transfer case front output shaft and housing, so most likely it's early RR box.

Thanks for the photos - is it me, or does the half spherical gear lever look to have a smaller pivot ball and selector ball? I have welded up the gearstick on mine to be about spherical, but there is still a lot of play in it.
