TD5 head corrosion
Hey guys , wondering if anybody has seen this issue before . I removed the head after having air leaking into the cooling system . It wasnt to bad just setting of the low water alarm . Not to bad i thought as it has 240K km's on it and since pulling it down found that it still had the plastic head dowels in it . BUT on closer inspection of the head the water ports on the 2 rear cylinders are corroded and very close to the combustion chamber . Theres about 2mm corroded and it's now about 4mm from the edge of the gasket on the cumbustion chamber . The pic looks worse than it actually is and the gasket had shifted due to the plastic dowels .
Undecided if repair , leave or replace . This port is actually blocked of when the gaskets fitted.
And yes it will go back in with steel dowels and new gaskets , bolts etc
Question is has anybody seen this before and how close it to close ?
I'd be happy to only get half as long out of it next time

I saw it on mine when the wrong coolant was used.
I suggest that you also look at the oil cooler and check it for pitting.

Thanks , I'll check the cooler out today . Did you replace , reuse or repair it ?
I'm undecided yet but thinking maybe see if it's possible to have it welded and then skim it

Sorry,
but that will leak,
Head gasket wont be able to seal the combustion chamber.

Take the head to a head repair specialist and see what they say, IMO that corrosion is too close to the edge of the gasket to be ignored, if it can be repaired economically do so or get a new head, Regards Frank.
