    3.5EFI electrical Qs

    gday,

    i have a 3.5EFI 87 Rangie,

i am just wondering how i can test/check the Distributor, leads and coil are ok?
i dont think the leads/sparke plugs have been replaced in ages - not since ive had it in 2years at least.

It seems to run very rich and blows smoke when cold - runs rough as well.

    thanks,
    Shem

    Shem,
I think you have answered your own question.
Plugs, leads , dizzy cap and rotor are pretty cheap and they sound overdue anyway.
Just make sure to get a genuine rotor as the cheapies often give problems..
You will also then know whether your problem is from ignition or injection.

if that dont work check your coolant temp. sensor.

these can cause all sorts of troubles.

    Are coils expensive?
Well yes, and you have to get a specific coil for an 87 if I recall . A GT40 will not do.
At this stage I would not supect the coil unless you can see oily crap oozing out. They usually die by just stopping after the car is warm.
You seem new at this. TIP OF THE DAY Only replace ONE pluglead at a time.
