    Hi Dave, I'm not a fan of using silicon on cooling systems as 'overflow' silicon squeezed out on assembly invariably settles in the core and can decrease flow/cooling.

    The replacement metal P gaskets are quite good. I've stuck mine in with soft set aviation cement.

    Don't put it on too thick and then let it dry. Being doing it for years on water pumps, thermostat housings etc and never had a problem.

    Each to their own though.
