IMHO I reckon that most overheating problems with the 300TDi (except for broken fan belt, like yours) are caused by the head gasket blowing, usually between 2 &3 pots, which then causes the overheating, NOT the other way round, Regards Frank.
This morning about 2klms from work i shredded a fan belt which we all know means excessive heat to a TDI, missus came over bringing the rest of my coolant and we went to repco to get a new belt.
Fitted belt and topped it up and after checking it was running ok i drove slowly the last 2klms to work, before leaving i checked the level again and topped it up and then drove home.
No noises or bubbling on the way or when i stopped at home so i'm hoping the improved cooling design of the new head has helped it survive.

Thats what i'm hoping and so far it sounds good but i will be cautious for a while.

Good luck! Hope it's all ok.
Do you have any after market temp gauges?
No ,not that it would have made any difference as it broke doing 100kph on the ring road and i knew when it broke as the tacho stopped but there was no where safe to immediately stop.
Touch wood it shows no signs of any drama, hasnt lost a drop of coolant and no bubbling in the tank.

Circumstances like that is when the Engine Saver TM2 Combo comes into its own - tells you when your coolant is disappearing and when your engine is getting hot - all before damage is caused.

Nothing would have told me what was going on any earlier than the belt breaking but yes a cheap temp sensor is going in shortly.

In that situation it would have told you that your engine was getting hotter unexpectedly (the alarm would go off before damage).

In situation like that, earliest warning will be tacho needle dropping and low voltage, before any temperature rise.
You should have charging light coming on as well.
