Rear Diff Housing / Rear Axles

Well I'm told my rear diff housing is bent. The LR service mob said they had trouble removing left axle and its very worn along with the wheel bearing being markedly worse than the other 3.

Now I'm not surprised by this as I've probably hit a few things a good thump with the rear diff, but its difficult to see (at least with the vehicle on the ground - perhaps its easier to see from underneath).

Sounds like I'll need a new diff housing (or rather, a non-bent second hand one).

Can anyone offer advice in this regard ?

Both rear axles and drive caps are very worn and I'll get around to replacing them eventually. I take it this would be a good time to slo in some Maxidrive units. Are the maxidrive axles for the diff-locks different to the normal heavy duty ones they make? If so, it seems prudent to get the diff lock type to make the upgrade later simpler / cheaper.

    Diff

Did you take the ute to a dealer (stealer) Vlad ? Maybe get a diff specialist to look at it before you fork out hard earned cash. My useless dealer can not even sell me a A/C belt. (Unless i was driving a bitsmissin crap box) Get a second opinion unless you have gone to a landrover specialist!!

Yeah it was an LR specialist repairer - wouldn't go to a dealer unless my life depended on it.

    Diff

Sounds expensive Vlad. Surely they can bend the diff to straighten it? Specialists cold bend front axle of trucks for wheel alignment purposes. Give Maxi Drive a ring anyway and get a second opinion or advise.

    REAL EASY!

my shorty had bent housings front and rear. replaced the front housing with a series 3 unit to get the bigger brakes. yet to do the rear.

it doesnt take much to bend them if you are pushing them hard in rough country, or if you lose control and hit a gutter like the i think the guy that owned mine did .

the front balls can be quite weak and bend as well i am told.

Get the new housing braced / laminated. If you have bent it once - you might do it again.

Rear is rare to bend as they are beefy (sailsbury right?) but will normally only bend if carrying BIG loads / trailers.

Fronts can be ben more easily as you tend to hit stuff harder.

Seriously, the damage was probably inflicted by a previous owner, unless you have treated Doris extremely BAD.
