Phil and sound deadener
Years back I acquired an ex Sydney County Council Transit van in beautiful silverpine green (yuk), which was bare, good worker though; 250 six with auto... I bought sheets of sound deadener and glued it all over the Tranny and what a difference. It was lightweight and very effective easy to shape. but the stuff looked like a cross between masonite and the skin of a golfball.

Low Range
My RR was doing the same and most people reckkoned it was the linkages or a buuggered transfer case. In the end I found that it was the left hand side cv joint and half shsft. Not hard to check. Engages LR fine now and does not jump out. As said above could also be the linkage setup.

Thanks CraigE. Will have a look. Have a minor 'shimmy' prob which I've read about (how to fix) before. But at last rego the pink slip supplier thought that side needed looking at; jacked it up and said the wheel bearing may be a bit sus. I suppose at 270,000k the are allsort of possibilities.

I finally got around to fixing this problem, thanks to all concerned or your input.
I removed the centre console and drilled out the riveted cover over the hi-lo stick. Over the years there has been some slack in the forward movement, about 3 mm. I took off another small gate giude which was restricting the movement, filed it and bingo! Low range, tested and works fine.

This isn't related, but Quiggers I see you are in Alstonville, I am in Tregeagle down the road. Do we have a decent Landrover expert in the area or is Capital in Casino the only option.

I hope you have solved the problem with this, but on my RR it was the same when I removed the console the plate fitted over the selector box was smaller, so I ground this away and it allowed me to drive it home and lock in low range. This worked weel for a few months and that is where I started looking and found that the front LH cv and outer half shaft were chewed out. Just something to keep in the back of your mind should it start to play up again. The outher half shafts are not a huge job to check, Just undo the retaining bolts and pull out and inspect the splines.

Messages:
John: I don't really know of too many I'd trust with the LR (apart from William Mackenzie NR Auto electrical, Russellton) who's officially an auto electrician and air con whiz, but while he doesn't 'officially' do other things he's good for advice - Mal next door isn't a Landy expert but he's genuine and a good mechanic, does trucks and other 4WDs, which is interesting.
Craig: I didn't forget this, thanks, and in general maintenance I'm going to do all the axles and diffs very soon. I recently did the t'f box and the auto, which seemed well, but I feel a very minor grind under my left foot a speed.
I know grinding out the plate is probably not the best remedy, but I just wasn't that motivated to get underneath and adjust things; I will get a workshop manual, whch may give me confidence to repair things.
I did the top end of the motor in the X1/9 a while back and its manual was all I needed , but I wouldn't have attempted that without the book.
Thanks guys, GQ

Thanks for that advice, I am doubtful about the expertise of the 'experts' at Capital, was over there last year to get a couple of new remotes and they had to take the vehicle down to the workshop to get the coding done, when the 'mechanic' brought it back he said I needed my tappets adjusted as they were rattling and he would book me in for it, well they weren't and and there was no noise coming form the motor.so I didn't.

When I bought the D a few years back I needed a few bits like front pads and I seem to recall that Capital said they couldn't get them.
When the great radiator / heater hose drama unfolded, they had no idea what was what, but a clever local with little LR experience was more helpful, which was successful.
Haven't bothered with them since....
Sad really, the only LR mob for miles....
Cheers. GQ
