Question How Strong are the CV's in a '96 Disco & '96 Defender?

Well, I've only recently returned from a great weekend up at LCMP with some friends. I took my little Zook and I managed to break my RHS Front CV and drove around mostly on Sunday in 3wd which went ok and I managed to keep up with the others.... no sure if I've also torn a Engine Mount as well.... I'm lucky in that they are fairly easy to source and replace, but it just becomes a PITA every time it happens..... It's not as if I was doing anything hardcore, but it was done when I was trying to climb this hill-climb that had some wombat holes.

It got me thinking and asking the question.... How easy is it to break your CV's on the Disco-1 Auto & '96 Defenders? I'm only running 235/85/16 M/T's on both and I don't plan to do any rock-climbing, etc, but if there is a hillclimb that I reckon I could get up, I want to be able to give it a go (within reason) without having the thought that I'm going to break a CV in trying.....

The other thing I want to ask is.... if u do manage to break a CV, can u simply drop off your front Driveshaft and lock the centre diff in and drive home or is it more involved than that ?? The reason I'm asking is with my little IFS Zook, I just simply unlock the front hubs to stop the front diff from turning and simply drive home w/o any concerns that the steering might bind or lock up...... this is dependant on how bad u break the CV of course....
I know some of the fellas in the Zook club that drive Sierras have to remove the CV and axle b4 they consider driving home to prevent any possibility in the steering locking up..... Not so with the Vitaras

    Thoughts....... ???

Depending on the break, it is possible for fragments of a broken cv jambing and binding the steering if you continue to drive with it still inside.

Yeah, I thought as much.... so pretty much the same thing applies for any Solid Front Diff Vehicle then..... depending how bad the breakage, req's u removing the effected CV/Axle..... That's where the little zook is better as I don't have to remove it until I get home and can repair it in the comfort of my own shed.....

Yeah, we removed the hilux's CV/axle in the comfort of a dirt hill with its but chained to a tree to stop it rolling off the jack. Not ideal, but couldn't move the thing to a safer spot. Pretty much broke the bell into two pieces.

304 V8 + diff locks + 35" Creepy Crawlers not ideal with standard hilux CV's either

Yeah, true..... But how strong are the CV's in the Disco's & Defenders? Are they prone to breaking easily ???

It depends, more than a few can drive everywhere and not break them yet others seem to do it as a matter of coarse,I don't worry about them. Pat

Yes they can break. Big tyres, some lock and a healthly amount of throttle can see them go. My 110 with the AEU2252 CVs which are supposedly the strongest put in a Defender had hairline cracks in both when I pulled them down and I use standard size tyres. I don't think I'm a crazy driver either, maybe the previous owner treated them harshly.

Ashcrofts supply a 23 spline CV wich is a much better CV than the 32 spline and fits straight in the 96 Defender but you do need new inner axles
