Tourist tips on a drive from Brizzy to Longreach

Hi

Some mates and I are in northern NSW (from WA) over Easter and we decided to do a week long dash afterwards from Brisbane to Longreach and back (to see Stockmans Hall Of Fame). We'll go up to Rocky and across and come back the more direct route. One of us wants to visit a feedlot in Dalby too.

Anyway if anybody can recommend and interesting places along the way, I 'd be most grateful. We'll be in a Ford Territory so can't go 4wd. Time is tight as you can see.

Pity you can't hire a Defender or Disco. Actually the hire car company deep in the fine print mention that an equivalent car will be provided if no Territories are available. My mate is a farmer who is a LR man from way way back and will not get into a Toyota. So that'll be fun to watch if the poor clerk at the airport tries to give him a Prado..

Want to do it in a week ? Sounds like you need a series Land Rover there mate.

Biggest pointer I can give watch out for roos and cattle, being VERY careful at night 'specially 'round Charlieville. Plenty of them both, mostly the what was green pick on the verge of the road.

Here we go, Qld. in a week.

Bundy distillery at Bundaberg

Blackwater. See the huge electric coal trains that shuttle to the coast and part of the underground mines.

Longreach. A day wasn't long enough for me when visiting the Stockmans. Two days it took me but then I had not hurry so I just wandered. If you wanted could take a sprint up to Kynuna to see the Brolgas, long way though.

Barcaldine. The Artesian Memorial at Barcaldine Windmill erected to commemorate the exploration work undertaken by the pioneers.

Charlieville is a bit of a spot too.

Chinchilla a definate look around too, from what I hear it's growing in popularity 'cos of the river views.

Then it's more or less a straight East run to Dalby, too look at a feed lot.

Ahhh.... I couldn't do it again in a week took me a month and that was fast for me.

The run from Brissy to Rocky along the coast is pretty scenic in places , depends on time as there is always some place worth stopping , especially Bundaberg to stock up on Bundy Rum
Rocky to Emerald opens out into long open stretches and you will need a drink by the time you get to Emerald, about 4/5hours drive.
Emerald is a major regional center and a good place to stock up on supply's or fix the Ford

Emerald to Longreach drive will take the best part of the day, you will defiantly need a beer in Barkie.

From Emerald out the little black dots on the map that look like little towns are in fact non de script railway sidings and have no fuel (I know, we just made it to Longreach .... ah for the fuel economy of a Disco diesel ) the few big black dots are towns. '8O'
Shocked

Anakie/Sapphire is worth a look just west of Emerald turn right off the highway abut 9 k also Rubyvale next door, the names say it all.

Barcaldine ( Barkie to the locals ) the Australian Labour Party has its roots here and the old gum tree ( what`s left of it ) stills stand near the railway station where striking shearers of 1891 reportedly held their meetings and from this the foundations for the ALP were laid.

If you are camping in Longreach can recommend the caravan park on the left coming into town, past the Stockman Hall of Fame (what a blast) just before a servo ( can`t recall the name) also if you get a chance got to go to the Qantas Museum, you can`t miss it, bloody big jumbo sitting there, also the Power House Museum in town .

If you come back via Blackall, Augathella, Roma allow some time to stop off at some of the small regional Museums along the way to Dalby, they have a wide array of machinery, trucks , tractors and artifacts that you may find interesting or you could come down from Emerald ,Springsure, Injune, Roma via the Carnarvon National Park and drop in to the spectacular Carnarvon Gorge defiantly worth a look, about a 30 k drive off the road on gravel.

I`am sure the boys on the forum can add more detail and places to your trip and given time we will have all out there for 6 months to cover all the aspects of this trip, this could almost become a “the trip I/we should have done “ we will supply the places you check them out and report back
Enjoy the trip
Cheers
