Simon,
You need to depress the clutch when stopping.

Check that the Vaccuum line from the Dizzy is not holed or broken, as that causes similar problems, Remove dizzy cap and remove carby end of vaccuum line, with an extension piece of plastic hose attached to it, suck, if it is easy ,and shows no resistance and the points plate in the dizzy doesn't move, that could be your problem. Attach a piece of hose direct from Dizzy to Carby and test drive, if problem cured then the Vaccuum line is holed
on your way home from work did you re-fuel by any chance?
No but it was getting very close to the empty mark by the time I did. Maybe I have some crap in my tank?
It's not on LPG?
Look for cracked or perishing wires in the dizzy. As the mechanical & vacuum advance suddenly drops, the advance plate on the dizzy will move around. If the earth wire on the advance plate has a poor connection or is frayed, the sudden movement may break continuity momentarily and stall your engine.
