hand winches

i need a hand winch. I hear that Tirfor are great but im on a very tight budget. Has anyone got either a Magnum or Big Haul hand winch?
What do you think of them? Either one better than the other?

If your on a tight budget why not use your high lift and some drag chain, certainly the cheapest way around it for the odd recovery.

Hard work but it`ll get you out of trouble.

Mate, I have the black rat version. Not too dear to buy, and certainly does the job when I need it too!

Keeps you fit too! I'd recommend carrying a block with you, as there hasn't really been once where I could do a direct pull due to weight limits!

Alex, check this out on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...4535862979&rd=1

It is exactly the same as a Big Haul and I can personally vouch for them as I used one 2 weeks ago to haul a stuffed Disco up a hill in a 1 to 1 configuration. The current bid is $269 (has been for the last 4 days) .. if you can get it for less than $300 .. I reckon you've got a bargain. Also comes with a free snatch block.

If you are set on a Big Haul ... Bars 'n Racks (TJM Warehouse) in Brookvale has a Big Haul on sale for $380 .. not sure if that is good or not.

Black Rat is apparently a good winch as well ... Rays Outdoors in VIC have them listed as a sale item .. although $450 doesn't seem all that cheap  http://www.raysoutdoors.com.au/sales/easter_05.html

I have a Tuff-Pull hand winch. It's 8 years old and still going strong

I wouldn't mind a vehicle mounted one, but I cannot justify the $3K plus pricetage for something I might use once a year on average. Used my hand winch 4 times sinced I owned it (2 of those was to pratice using it in the back yard )

and thats if it works when you need it.....it may have corroded due to lack of use.
electric winches apparently need regular maintenance to keep them in good condition and to stop them corroding.

afetr all they are the first thing to enter any water or mud crossings etc.

if you have to use it once or twice it will make you a better driver so you wont ever have to use it again

Always a use for a winch, their greatest use straightening body damage from hitting a roo out in the wilds. Much gentler than chain around a tree and reversing pulling the body straight.
