    Series 3 rockers

I need to replace the rocker shaft on my Series 3 4 cylinder petrol. Can anyone tell me if the rocker assembly can be removed, which entails removing the centre row of head bolts, without having to take off the head & replace the gasket?

You can do this, removing the head bolts will not affect the head gasket.

However, when you have removed all the rocker arm fastenings and withdrawn the pushrods, place the inverted rocker cover back over the cover studs, screw the nuts back on then lift the cover off with the rocker arm attached.
This prevents the springs pushing the rocker arms etc. off the shaft, keeps everything together.

On reassembly torque rocker shaft studs to 19ft.lbs., ALL the head bolts to 90ft.lbs.

I would drain the coolant (probably not absolutely necessary, but a good precaution), and slightly loosen all head bolts then retorque all of them in the correct order when reassembling.
