Before you go to far, investigate the LT95, pretty much bullet proof.
It would be a shame to do some much work only to be pulling gear boxes.

Can you upgrade that box, or is it a case of using a totally different box instead of that one???
John has rebuilt the SIII box (after much use) including changed ratios
Also some research.
The test will be in the use of the right foot. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
The County LT95 from the County can be inserted if required.
Do the S3 box and lt95 have the same bolt pattern etc? I'm interested in the S3 gearbox updates as i'd like to keep the original box with my conversion as well.

Lt 95 is 4spd and transfer box cast in one, so no it cant be interchanged with the s3 box without using the s3 transfer. I would rebuild the lt95 and have it ready as it will be needed - they can handle 400 sb chevs.
Won't the use of a Series III box give it part time 4WD?
I'm a little bit thick - I can't understand why the whole lot was lifted up then the chassis dropped leaving the body in the air. Why not just lift the body off?

The Body is relatively fragile and to lift it from two points (that is the limit of John's equipment) would impose significant stresses.
Lifting the whole assembly meant after lifting that we could suspend the body in six strong places (The b and c pillars and the rear). All vertically care of the spreaders so that there is no compression and then lower the chassis. Easy and gentle.
More sophisticated equipment could avoid this but we were using appropriate technology.
BTW the later SIII had permanent 4wd.
What about an auto, might be a bit more forgiving.
A turbo 400 or 700 would mate up nicely to you GM V8.
Sorting the transfer box would take a little more though.
I had a LT95 behind my 6.2 when i had it in the 77 rangie and it was screaming its head off even with 0.99 gears in the transfer case. Used to get about 550 k's a tank. Flywheel and clutch clearance was a problem too.
Have now got the 6.2 in my 88 rangie with a ZF auto and i am getting worse milage. These big chevies need to to be doing 1800 - 2000 to give the best mileage. Mine does 2500rpm at 110 at gets about 500 - 550ks on a trip. Around town i get 400 - 450ks a tank. The torque convertor locks up at just over 80 km/h so around town it is doing to many revs. Either put in T700 with lock up in all gears or find someone that can make an adptor kit for a NV4500 gearbox. If you are off roading majority the time and no long distance highway trips the LT95 is a strong box and will be fine. Would be very gentle with the series 3 box. Remember these motors develop heaps of torque and at only at 1800 - 2000 rpm. Keep up the goodwork guys.

I think he has a series 111 stage 1 box which i think is a lt 95 ????
