I might add that it is great to drive in 6 hours from Sydney to Seymour in a loaded Disco without having to stop for fuel. And to be able to walk to the counter to pay for $80 of fuel. Comfort and Economy and no speeding fines. Everyone else stopped at Gundagai.

Again the V8.
I knew little about LR, other than Army 110's, but I have had a few V8's over the years, mainly FORD (say it loud and proud) clevelands. I chose the V8 Disco.
They are way thirsty, I put mine on LPG, cheaper, but visit lots of servos on the way worth it.
The main advantage to a V8 is that deeply gutteral, almost phallic, bring a grin to deathrow, turn heads at the lights, terrorise the hyundais, bring tears to ya eyes, my god that sounds good GRUNT that only a V8 can produce..........

I understand what you are saying about lack of power.... When I bought my disco all my previous cars for the previous 15 years or so were either V8's ... or Hot 4's withwell over 200 horsepower at the wheels.. I like a car that moves...
I had that mindset when I was looking for a Disco... not interested in Diesels.. they are smelly and slow.. :oops:
.... well to be honest.... while I still LOVE my V8 disco.... if I was buying it today.... I'd buy a TD5.
These guys are right... I get about 450 km out of 70 - 80 litres... at current prices that hurts..... Also means that touring distances.... I need to carry extra fuel
Think about how you will use the truck... if your planning on Outback touring... forget petrol.. go diesel...
If you don't like BIG fuel bills... forget Petrol... go Diesel..
If you doin't care about the fuel or the limited range ..... go the V8 :mrgreen: ... they are a great truck too... ( Just somewhat more taxing on the pocket)
Guys thanks this has been the info I have been looking for and will keep it in mind when I start looking for my LandRover Discovery and it could very well be desiel after all will see what happens.
1st I need to sell my 2 cars so there not in the drive way taking up space.
If you guys have more info for me let me know for example what to look for when buying one I'll be looking at the 91 to 96 range.
IMO, get one of the 300TDi versions ('94/'95 MY onwards). They're a lot more refined. Personally, I don't like the early Discos as the load space is crap. The Series II (TD5) Disco is a much better vehicle IMO... You've got a decent sized load area for a start.
Hmmm.... I wouldn't have said that it was completely gutless. What you could well be driving is a vehicle that was starting to have problems with its fuel pump.Quote:

A common problem with the pump on the 200 & 300 TDi units is for the mechanism which controls the fuel delivered vs boost pressure to sieze up. It's a very simple problem to cure but until you do, when you put your foot down, all you're doing is increasing the amount of air getting into the engine but the fuel supply is staying at the same level as tickover!!!!
She will drive OK around towm but on the open road it'll be like driving a gutless wonder... She'll also struggle to get over 100 kph.

I proudly drive my 92 3.9 Rangie with unichip , modded heads and exhaust
1 Who WANTS to drive 6 hours straight!! you have to stop for a pee anyway, so why not at a servo.
2 If you are in a group you have to stop for the shortest range car anyway.
3 I can actually OVERTAKE other cars on hills, particularly diesels who are keen to show me their torque.
4 The savings on fuel cost are bugger all. I once went to Carnarvon Gorge from Sydney with a mate in a bistsa****ty diesel. the fuel cost difference was $40.
5 I don't gas everyone else off road. Ever been behind a Disco on a slow trail. Have mercy on your mates.
6 I can actually ACCELERATE from lights. When my 3.9 was standard , a TD5 tried to out accelerate me from the toll booth on the Hills Expressway. He was empty , I had 5 people in. He held me for about 20 metres. Even a chipped TD5 accelerates slower than a standard 3.9 (Land rover world tests in UK.)
7 Good luck not getting filthy at the diesel pump
Summary, get a 3.9 petrol. unichip, exhaust. about 15litres/100 on the open road. If you commute around the city they guzzle, but you could put a brick under the accelerator and go like a diesel.

camel_landy this could be very true I will have to find another desiel which won't be easy in Geelong as there are not much dealer's here. Everytime I look for a car I go to Melbourne.

Wrong year and not in my price range.
Also I can't look for one till I have sold my other 2 cars 1st.
