2 main things to look for, both V8 and TDI cars in this age bracket will have left the factory with an inherant gearbox problem. This is the lack of lube to the main shaft which cause slack in the drive line and failure at about 200k. The fix is a drilled transfer case input gear so ask if the box has been rebuilt or modfied, all cars with a transfer case serial number that ends in less than "F" have this problem. The other main problem is the TDI timing belt issue this can be fixed by the correct reto fit not really a drama but just be mindful that you may have to do it and if they can't tell it's been retroed or the last time the belt was change get it done straight away. Thats it really for big ticket stuff.

To butt in here the input shaft issue is common to both. (gearbox to transfer case)

The timing belt issue is 300 tdi (post March 94). I think that there were two or three modification kits depending on the year of build.

www.lrenthusiastforum.com has a lot of discussion on this which can be found via a search. But regardless if you buy a 300tdi then evidence of belt changes and modifications should be looked for in the service records.

I left early and travelled with the Truckies on UHF 40.

    Now that was entertaining.

1 Who WANTS to drive 6 hours straight!! you have to stop for a pee anyway, so why not at a servo.

    I have good bladder control

2 If you are in a group you have to stop for the shortest range car anyway.

Whilst they pour fuel from a jerry can and I can have a ****top.

3 I can actually OVERTAKE other cars on hills, particularly diesels who are keen to show me their torque.

And watch the fuel guage descend

4 The savings on fuel cost are bugger all. I once went to Carnarvon Gorge from Sydney with a mate in a bistsa****ty diesel. the fuel cost difference was $40.

    Bitsa****ty not LR

5 I don't gas everyone else off road. Ever been behind a Disco on a slow trail. Have mercy on your mates.

    Wear a mask or lead

6 I can actually ACCELERATE from lights. When my 3.9 was standard , a TD5 tried to out accelerate me from the toll booth on the Hills Expressway. He was empty , I had 5 people in. He held me for about 20 metres. Even a chipped TD5 accelerates slower than a standard 3.9 (Land rover world tests in UK.)

First to the next red light wins

7 Good luck not getting filthy at the diesel pump

Slippery and smelly. Buy some Wipes

Summary, get a 3.9 petrol. unichip, exhaust. about 15litres/100 on the open road. If you commute around the city they guzzle, but you could put a brick under the accelerator and go like a diesel.

Goes for both but really only effects the 5 speeds as the main shaft is not as hard and dropping the clutch every gear change doesn't help.

    ZF 230 000K no probs

Mine is smooth and shifts well after 230000K.

Just maintain well and no worries. Change fluid regularly and service auto as per book!

Get an auto 300Tdi. They're great!
