Tom the Projector is a 12 volt 1600mA automatic battery charger for lead acid batteries, part number AC250B,

Just check what type of battery you have because I think that calcium, gel and glass batteries all require different types of charging,

I bought mine from a battery specialist to match the one on my car.

You can certainly charge through a cigarette plug. Multi stage chargers from Matson, C-Tek, Redarc etc can be left connected permanently. Solar panels with regulators also. They come with connections or Autobarn has leads with various combinations of plugs already made up.

    Question

Thanks to all for your help. I have one more question. The Land Rover Perentie has a duel battery system. which battery should I put the charger on?

Are you charging to ensure it starts or to ensure your auxiliary battery can power a fridge? Do you start the vehicles regularly enough to keep the starting battery charged? Your battery controller should ensure the starting battery is charged to some level (12.8?) and then connect the batteries. Personally, if the vehicle is being stored for long periods I would prioritize starting but others may disagree.

If I was storing for lengthy periods I would be charging both. I would put a temporary link between them.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

I have 2 vehicles which stay unattended in the shed all winter whilst we are away travelling somewhere.

Have a very simple procedure for maintaining the batteries by connecting a 2.5a battery charger to each, then connecting the chargers to 240v. via a 24hr. timer.

The timer is set to give whatever charge time/24hrs. is considered necessary, in my case I opt for 2 x 2hr. charges/24hrs. ie 5a.hrs./day

When we arrive home the batteries are always fully charged and ready to go.

Hi Jon, all the battery types you mentioned are LEAD ACID batteries and this is a common mistake.

That charger will safely charge all of the different types of lead acid batteries.

The voltage levels it operates at are set to make sure you do not over charge sensitive type batteries like some Gels.

Hi sadcase, a basic multi stage charger offers better results and any 3 stage charger, around 5 amps, will do the job you are after.

Yes, as said below our camper trailer is stored when not in use with 240 volts running to a 3 stage charger mounted in the battery box connected to 105 ah deep cycle lead acid battery. The charger periodically tests the battery, charges it if necessary and shuts down. I just have to remember to check the water levels in the battery, which is why the next battery I buy will be a maintenance-free sealed AGM. I also have a Matson DC-DC charger in there which boosts the charge from the trailer plug to 20 amps while the engine is running. It is linked back to a Traxide 160 battery controller. There is also an Anderson plug for the 80 watt solar to go directly to the trailer battery. You could just buy a small solar kit with regulator and leave it attached directly or connect it to a battery linked to both vehicles for a set and forget setup. Hope describing this in detail helps you decide what to do.

Do you think with a dual battery set up that putting the charger on the main starter battery will in effect also charge the auxiliary battery??
