Have a look on carpoint and carsales.com. When i was looking in september last year for my diesel, there were heaps of V8's around. Remember, as fuel prices increase the prices come down as more and more flood the market as people get sick of putting fuel in them. matt

I really prefer the style/aesthetics of the 2/3door form...whether it be early Range Rover, Defender 90 or Discovery.
As well, Ace's comments re petrol prices are bound, I hope, to have an effect on the on the resale pricesof V8 engined vehicles?

The fuel prices most definitley have an affect on V8 prices, you only have to look at the prices being asked for Series II Disco V8's compared to the TD5 prices. Good thing is for you though, the prices are being move in your favour, its not often that happens. But you will most defitely find a Rangie cheaper than a Disco, after all the rangies had been around for around 20yrs before the Disco arrives. The Discos should be more efficient than the early rangies though, as the carby V8 disco never made it here as they didnt meet pollution regs, as a result the injected 8 arrived not long after the TDi. Good luck with the purchase, just dont rush, there are heaps around, getting a dodgy one would make an exciting process bad. I was once told to save a little longer and get one you are happy withm than get one straight away just for the sake of getting it early cause you cant wait. Matt

My SIL bought his disco, a 3.5lv8/ 3door at what he thought a good price.The way it handled on/off road conditions and the fact I am an old landie lover from way back convinced me that the 300tdi we bought was the way to go. For me, no probs. at all except a concerning coolant leak (see post 3ootdi coolant leak) but being closely monitored.
However, the SIL has some ongoing worries, oil consumption being one,but more concerning is serious rust under the door frames. Every time he shuts a door a packet of rust falls out!! The vehicle is parked outside next to the ocean, so perhaps this is the problem.
As an all round 4wd the disco will show a clean pair of heels to the rest unless they are very modified. The v8 is a bit on the thirsty side, my tdi always good for 9.5l/100km.

Yeah but there isn't a Nissan Dealer at Manly, just Manly Mowers, old mate did me a mean deal on Victa Corvette though.

Not good news the name "ozseasider says it all ...75 meters away from the Pacific Ocean(despite maps saying Tasman Sea :?: ) and NO garage.
A major reason for the Land/Range Rover purchase decision is the advantage of the aluminum/steel construction on a separate chassis... having "lost" 3 mono constructed vehicles to rust :evil: I'm hoping that the Landie will, if needed, be able to be kept for an indefinite period with due replacement of rust affected parts...in the long term I'll have the chassis galvanized, body-off anti-rust/corrosion treatments and on-going mechanical replacement with high rust resistant parts(e.g) stainlesss steel exhaust, braided brake lines, nuts & bolts...
So another question...of the various Land Rover models,(Range/Discovery/Defender/Series) which do members believe the most able to be "resurrected" by the outlined method?

The series would be the pick, simple, no electronic trickery at all. But the defender wouldnt be far behind, essentially the same vehicle, but with a few mod cons, better more powerful and efficient engine, air con (depending on model) etc.
Anthother advantage of the series vehicles is the price they can be had for. You can get quite a project vehicle quite cheap, and condition isnt as important when you are doing a ground up resto. Matt

I would be inclined to go looking for a good 110/Defender wagon either V8 or Diesel as they are a much easier vehicle to rebuild if the dredded tin-worm strikes, their construction is much more mechano like (the body basically bolts together) and lend them selves to both body/chassis repairs. The 110/Defender is coil sprung and has the higher gearing, same Diff ratio as RR and Discos, the early ones have 4speed boxes and the later 5 speed, they are the same basic mechanical layout as both the RR & Disco but have the Classic Landy Body with all that space for gear.
