Changing the exhaust works wonders for the responsiveness and fuel consumption. Other basics are to keep the tyre pressures right and get the mixture checked too. My AFM is a bit dodgy at the moment so my consumption is a bit 'how's your father' but not too bad.
Headed away over easter and was getting a tick over 15l/100km on petrol and about 18l/100km on gas, until I headed into the high country that is.
I have a 94 V8 disco, I put on a snorkle, tuned extractors, 2 1/2" exhaust. it goes a hell of alot better, sounds great but no matter how easy or hard I drive it my fuel consumption is still the same as yours - the changes made minimal difference to the consumption. The biggest problem that I can think of in regard to what in this day and age is appaling fuel consumption, is on short runs the car seems to run on choke for a long time which is why there seems to be such a big difference between city and hwy.
My 3.9 Rangie runs on choke a very short time (about 1.5 Km at 60KMH at say 20C ambient). Suggest that you change your thermostat. They can fail by the plunger not closing fully.
On my 77 I only found out when I went to Katoomba in winter . At 5C the thing cooled . As I had fitted injection it then went rich. New thermostat fixed in ten minutes.

change the oil every 5000, use Penrite HPR30. DONT argue. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img]
filter every 10.
there are LOTS of threads on oils in here,,,
unless you TRUST the service history ,, best to start from scratch and change everything.
Mines done 287 odd thousand and--

so longevity is good if maintained.
Plan for a flowmeter and/or computer at some stage down the track,,

for the price of an oil filter, I would recommend changing the filter everytime you change oil
tell me this then??
last filter i bought for my disco came from REPCO.
now it cost me $36.50.
NOW why is it that this filter is the same as a FORD Z9
filter, only its 1/2 its lenght! but a z9 only costs $12.00
so how does 1/2 the filter cost more than a whole one???
anyway i now get all my oil and filters for free.

The theory behind the short filter is that it is less likly to be damaged, $36 your getting clipped. Both TDI and V8 use the same filter. MR sell factory LR units for $17 and aftermarket for less.
