remote series transfer case

has anyone had experience with converting a series transfer case for remote input.
i would like to mate a supra 5 speed via a spud shaft?
keeping the series t-case still gives me part time 4wd + its already had the high speed conversion.

hope this makes sense.

btw - I will be running a warmish 202 hence the reason for the toyota box.

To make room i can push the motor forward a fair bit and as a last resort
the transfer case can be pushed back .
I havn't measured yet but should fit.

sorry i aint no landy purist!

Hi Crossy
It Should be reasonably easy.
You would need a piece of steel plate 10mm or so thick, copy the series gearbox mounting flange onto it and cut it out.
You would need a bearing with oil seal mounted the plate.
You would need to shorten the supra output housing as much as possible, get the output shaft cut long enough to slide into the landy transfercase and also re-splined and hardened to suit the landy.
Sounds easy enough, and can be done.I did see a 2a on an american website, they had basically done this except with a 302 windsor and top-loader.

Thats a bloody good idea, i'm putting a 202 in my trusty beast and it came with a 4 speed, maybe i could use it in much the same way instead of putting pressure on the standard box. Hmmmm

hey Andrew, noticed you are building a 302 auto powered landie,
are you using a series transfer case? any pics of the adaption?

also just had a look at the CRS site - heaps of options daihatsu truck 5 speed to holden six or top loader to holden six.

http://www.rodshop.com.au/bellhousings.htm

this looks tempting -

http://www.rodshop.com.au/superchargers.htm

the main reason i'm looking at a swap is my box is shagged,
jumps out of third and fourth - stuffed syncros :?:

i dont think it will cost much more $$$$ to do a swap than to do a rebuild.
and at least with a rebuild i wont have to worry about smashing gears.
instead i can worry about twisting axels and prop shafts.
plus 5 gear would be nice.

BTW also looked into having the standard series gear set heat treated,
frozen and other weird stuff to increase its strength. fairly cheap but i dont think it would help the syncros. and how much (if any) stronger after the process is also a bit of a mystery. The company i talked to normally does cranks, rods etc and had never done gears?

may look at having the axels done though.
quoted ~$45.00 pair if they both fit the chamber.

Hi Crossy
I have the standard Landy transfercase, the place I got the conversion from told me that the series transfercase is one of the toughest out there, the only one stronger in their opinion is the remote mounted nissan 720 unit.
The adaptor is a Seatons Engineers,WA ph 08 94096935.The C4 auto output housing is removed,in place goes the Seatons very short housing that bolts to the Landy transfercase. The auto output shaft is shortened re-splined to suit the Landy and re-hardened.
My Bro also has the same auto setup in a 2A wagon, with a mildly worked XF 4.1 LPG motor,it flies!!!!
Also the holden conversion in my 109 van is a Seatons conversion kit,a coincidence,as it was in there when I bought it.
Seatons do all sorts of conversions,it could be worth chatting to them, they could have an off the shelf item for yours.
My auto conversion was around $850,but that included removing modifying and replacing the output housing on the auto.
Have a look in the gallery,LandyAndys Landys.

What's this one..... a shorty ? Thing will be if it's a shorty the placement of the cross braces on the chassis as to what where. To give even more room you can move the radiator support panel forward like the 110, cut all the rover support bracket stuff off and use a thinner radiator, commodore won't fit as they are too wide but something along that line. When I had mine in bits I mocked up a commodore rad. out of interest and didn't fit as it rested up the relay arm so I just stuck the landy one back in.

Not into powershifts (auto) ? Could get rid of a little of the hassle going cable driven auto, mount the shifter anywhere you like plus they make the 'load' more gradual on the rest of the drivetrain. Where as you know manuals it's a bit less gradual and you... erm.. ops: I mean I tend to break stuff with them.

Powerglide might be a line of enquiry.

yeah not a shorty unfortunatly. 109" of pure terror.

i would love to go down the auto path. as you say heaps better in almost every way. But i will stay with a manual as i like to be in control when going down hills and an overdriven 5th gear really appeals.

the transfer case can go back around 6" and the motor forward about the same without any real dramas other than moving the radiator to the other side of the support. oh yeah and new custom length prop shafts

It will still take me a few months to have the new motor finished so ive got a bit of time to look for the best option. will ring seatons to see what they can do. Thanks for that andrew.

do it the real easy way.

cut the back off of a series gearbox, keep the output shaft add an oil seal then machine back the shaft and weld a UJ yoke to the output shaft.

instant remote tcase.
