Hey Guys,
Its time for my 98 Discovery 300 TDI to have a Auto Gearbox rebuild.
Last couple of times on the beach I have been suffering from slippage after prolonged periods of heavy going in the soft sand. Recently when starting of from cold it holds on to 1st gear until it changes into 2nd gear at 45kms an hour, this soon goes back to normal after warming up. Sometimes first thing in the morning it will not engage forward gear or reverse gear for a minute or two. I have been advised by the repairer it will be a minimum $2000. Can anyone tell me the current price for a rebuild in Brisbane and who is good and reliable.

I'd be very surprised if you got out of it for 2k - sorry to say.
I had same symptoms and full reco was required. I got a c/o fully reco box for about 4k. But you might have better options living in a major centre?
I got mine from Ashcroft for about $4500, a few years ago, fitted myself. That price included all the customs, gst and courier company rip offs - and core charge to Ashcroft because I was not returning my old box.
The box also included some Ashcroft mods that improve longevity and strength. Very easy people to deal with.
Ashcroft did say they would sell me their referb kit plus upgrade parts if I wanted to tackle rebuilding the old box still in my possession - roughly $1,000 at the time. Still something for the future. Maybe your rebuilder could consider this.
Of course I did initially make an enquiry locally. The bloke said straight up $6k fitted.
If mine died i would rebuild it myself, never done an auto before but for the cost i reckon i could do it as the cost for a reco box locally would almost be uneconomical on a D1.

I reckon I'm getting close to this point unfortunately. I've made enquiries and as mine is VNT'd I'd be looking at a lower stall converter, third gear lock up and possibly lower first gear (which apparently is now a possible option) to make the most of it. Around the $6k fitted mark. It was fine up until I started putting a whole lot more grunt through it, to be expected at the 350k mark I suppose.
Sand driving also killed my box at 120,000km. Did you see the transmission warning light come on at all?
Anyways its 3k plus for a rebuild and as others have said its worth considering 3rd gear lockup mod and stronger parts from a HP22. However I just fitted a bigger cooler after the rebuild and no overheating since (search P38 cooler upgrade on here). Also consider switch to synthetic fluid after the rebuild as much better heat tolerance and longevity.

Hi all,
I found that the ZF 4HP24EH and 4HP22EH is totally not reliable gear. Is anyone installed a different gear on D2 TD5?
Thanks,
Amit
Amit1,
Do you mean gear, or gearbox?
