    Airbag man troubles.

    Hello everyone :-)

I need advice on installing airbag man airbags on a 1985 land rover county.

I have them installed already but the problem is that the steering arm contacts the bottom bracket for the shocky and restricts the wheel turning fully.

The engineers there are basically saying my county is modified but I don't see how that is possible?

Aren't all county / defender steering links and tolerances the same??

I've come a long way to get here and now I'm facing having to possible revert everything back to the way it was!

Mmmm, perkins phaser... ;-) . All county and defender bracketry is almost identical, the only small differences are bolt hole sizes etc, certainly nothing that will interfere with what you are experiencing. Sometimes the axle housing and its associated bits will be out of place as the panhard rod drags the differential over to the right when vehicle is raised. is it possible to post pics as we can definately help with some actual images of the points of contact etc.

    Land Rover Airbags

    So here are some pics,

the second pic shows that I attempted to get clearance by grinding of the corner of the bracket but it eventually just hits the shock.

I had to wind out the bolt that stops the wheel turning to full lock so I have less turning circle in that direction.

Obviously I am in discussion with airbag man but they are telling me that it fits on every other defender they have worked on and that there must be some modification with my county?? But what modification would cause this unless there is some slight difference between the county and defender.

    Thanks,

    Alex.

    Airbag troubles.

After I wound out the wheel stop I thought that I could live with the small amount of steering I might loose but then I went for a drive and I could notice the lack of turning a lot so I tried to measure it to compare each side and it does seem that there is a large amount of reduction in the wheel lock angle.

So I have to find out why this is happening just to my county??

There is only 1 difference I can think of at this point, the county swivel housings are different to defender, (actually early defender to 1994 with solid rotors are the same as county) but that shouldn't be an issue as far as I can see because from memory there is no difference in steering drag link and pitman arm dimensions,: those 2 items should be different in some way if the swivel housing is different, ie the position of the cast section that interferes with the shock mount. My opinion at this point is that the lower shock mount needs to be revised.... :-( . This is a common sight on air suspension range rover if the lock stops aren't adjusted correctly, and they have a far slimmer lower mounting design/ bracket that is a welded /fabbed part of the axle housing. I have a front diff housing here if you are interested, everything is just swap over to county gear...freight would hurt though. you need to take a look under a '93 eas rangie and see what I mean first.

Are the shocks mounted to the front, that seems strange to me as they are vulnerable like that.
I would have thought that they should be mounted to the rear like an airbag RRC.

Pic of my airbag RR front housing with lower shock mounts ... in the front of the spring, currently unused, and look to be very much lighter than the airbagman units.

    Unhappy Gave up.

Thanks everyone for the replies but as I have spent so much time on this and have reached the end of my patience I spent the weekend replacing the front airbag man suspension with the coils that were in there.

Airbag man continues to state that they have never had this problem with any land rovers even though I had to modify some of their parts (with their consent) because the lower mounts are different between the defender and county.

I'm pretty disappointed and now have to consider what to do next as I would have expected they would do the right thing and offer a refund but as yet this doesn't look like the case!

Are you sure the shocks are supposed to be in front of the axle? Why not turn the mounts around which will solve your problem and be better for wheel travel.

I'd try what ben said, or find an eas diff housing. I had to med my eas shock brackets to fit my raid 90's and thats with coils, its a close fit.
