G'Day AdamN,
I went through a similar problem a few months ago. My 2001 TD5 Discovery had 2004 model 255/55 18's fitted when I bought it last August, or September, I can't remember exactly.
I needed 16 inch wheels for my upcoming trip to the Kimberlys. Easier and cheaper to get replacements outback! I ended up with Dunlop Grandtrek AT2's, 245/70 R16. Have a look at http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculato...p?action=submit
The difference for the Dunlop’s from what you have is:
Speedometer Difference: 1.900% too slow Diameter Difference: 1.87%
In easy terms when you now do 100 km/h the Grandtreks will do 98.1 km/h.
I bought these at Beaurepaires in Brisbane fitted for $245 each. I bought 5 so may have them a bit cheaper than usual.
I have done around 4,000kms so far and cannot fault the tyres. Not noisy on the road. Good in the wet, and my engine revs just a bit less than before. Mine are 1.6% different than the 18's.
I don't know how well the Dunlops handle the rough stuff but I plan to do about 30% on 4x4 roads on my trip. Time and travel will tell I suppose.
Hope this helps.
Barry
