    97 P38A 4.6 into Disco 2

Hi fellas. I can get my hands on a 20,000k 4.6 from a 97 P38A. Will it bolt straight in and my injection and BOSCH Hei engine management gear just bolt straight up to it? As far as I know its the 4 bolt mains engine and I understand it should be easy as...? 9.35: 1 compression so my injected LPG should go well on it.

    Cheers

Also if i put it in it is bound to have some coking up under the rinks and crankcase and possibly heads...
Do i need to use an oil flushing additive or just a good semi synthetic (penrite is my drop of choice ) and then tow my 2 tonn boat hard for a day then drop the pil and put new stuff in and change then at every 5000k for a while to clean her out.?

I would use my thor plenum and pcv so they should be fine.

    Cheers

The rings and bores in these motors are ptetty hard to kill.

I am pretty sure the crank position sensor in a GEMS and Thor are different and AFAIK the mount is different. I somehow think the tone ring is different so you should check that the number of teeth is the same or swap the Thor flexplate.

So you should check whether the CPS is compatable with the Thor wiring, or whether you can do a work around by splicing the wires.

I am not sure whether a GEMS has the knock sensors required by Thor or the holes in the block for them, so maybe someone who is sure can answer that one..
The Thor manifold and rail will fit no problems.
It will be the devil in the electronic detail that will get you not the mechanicals.

RPI Engineering says the blocks are essentially the same but you need to swap the crank sensor, this may require a little work. Also a variation in the cam gear regards the cam sensor.

    4.6 Engine Block-variations

For all 4.0 & 4.6 upgrades to pre '96 Vehicles, the following information has no relevance, however for later Gems and Thor type engines it is important to know what one you have, as the difference involves the ignition timing pick-up device fitted into the block
(they can, if needed, be swapped between block types)

The arrow points to the ignition pick up device, There are 2 Types, this one & a flat type one.

The arrow points to the Knock sensor. This is only required in the block post '95.

They weren't that compression ratio from new - has it been rebuilt with HC pistons?
Australian P38s were all low compression until around 2001.

Does anyone know if the ign timing will be out if i dont change cam sprocket? I suppose if it isn't the check engine light will still come on...? EDIT - the sprocket will be changed. My flywheel will go on also. She will get new gaskets throughout and full inspection in the process and probably my Crane Stage 2 LPG Cam also, so there should be a few neddies unleashed! It appears that the Honkers owner did maintenace by the book - so yearly servicing even though virtually no k's... What a great find. Should go like stink on LPG too. I will leave the stock EFI program I think...I seem to recall there is some debate about whethre there was a difference?

Don't use engine flush... Destroys far more than it fixes

Gems and thor crank angle sensors, flywheels/ flexplates and cam sensors/ gear all different, as previously mentioned. The thor crank sensor needs to be fitted in addition to the adapter piece in the block, it is attached with a rolled pin to locate it, then welded. This is a bit of a pain to change but if the engine is that good then worth it. also i'd swap front covers over, too. Be wary of Hong Kong engines, they spend a looong time idling and run very hot mostly as humidity there is high, too.

The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
