    Tyre Question...Sort of...

    Hello Forumites,

I have two sets of wheels/tyres for my D2.

245/70-16 Bridgestone Dueller M/T's for play (about 2000km old) and 245/70-16 Silverstone/Goodyear A/T's for daily drive duties. Both sets on alloys.

The A/T's are real close to needing replacement. Maybe a few '000 Km.
I recently acquired two steels which eventually will hold the M/T's.

In hindsight, I really wanted taller M/T's, maybe 265/75-16 but at the time I wanted the 'swap-ability' of being able to use a common spare so bought the 245's.. Next set of M/T's will be taller and fatter!

Anyhoo, now it's time to buy new A/T's, I am thinking about going taller. Maybe 255/75, 265/70 or 265/75. I do have a 2" lift so no concerns there.
Having read many of the numerous tyre threads, I am really starting to convince myself that going taller won't actually be much advantage on the bitumen as a daily. If anything, I need to offload the M/T's and go taller there. Having same size on all rims would make it easier and cheaper managing spares though...

Anyone like to weigh in? Any thoughts?

    Cheers
    Ralph

Not sure if the D2 speedo is 5-6% over like a D1 but going up to 265/70 in AT's could correct that plus give a bit better cruisability with a larger rolling diameter.
I went up in MT's and my at's are 245/70 which i havent used since as i prefer the larger tyres even for road use.

On my D2 I run 235 85 16 AT for my daily tyres with the standard alloys and when I want the harder stuff I use the 265 75 16 MT on P38 alloys. I just bought a second hand tyre for the spare, for each set. The 235 tyre I got for a 6 pack of beers off a member here. Its just nice to have an AT that's not noisy on road like the MT.

I forgot to mention with those size tyres your speedo will be out by about 8%.

    Cheers,
Will the speedo read 8% faster than ground speed or 8% slower than ground speed?
    I always get it confused.

That would be slower so at 100 on the speedo you will be doing 108 .

I recently put a set of 265/70 D697LT on the D2. Originally had 255/70 fitted. The 255 were 3.7% oversize and the 265 are 5.7% oversize. Using the GPS to get the tyre co-efficient setting on the nanocom right, so the road speed shown on the nanocom matched the GPS, I ended up using 4% and 6% respectively ...

... Therefore it's safe to say that with std tyres (235/70 or 255/65 or 255/18) the D2 speedo is spot on. What it says is what your doing if your running one of those 3 standard tyre sizes.

Now, if I'm doing 100 on the speedo, the GPS & nanocom read 106km/hr.

    I think 245/70 is about 1.6% oversize.

    Thanks,
I'll be shopping around in the next few weeks for some new donuts. I suspect I'll probably go for 265/70 or 255/75 AT's then when I wear out the MT's, go tall with them as well.
I have a nanocom, so interested in being able to 'correct' a lttle for tyre size.. mmmm, I'll have to look into it.
