DiscoII Rear door lock

This is a common fault. Same thing happened to mine after a dusty back road weekend. Infact mine has just jammed again. I pulled it apart the first time and could not see a way of freeing the arms or re-aligning the mechanism so I took it into the local dealer....big mistake. They reckoned the whole swith mechanism was buggered and needed replacing - $275. They replaced the mechanism and installed the switch etc tec. Now, 4 weeks later the door is jammed again! Not happy! it is going back tuesday and I will insist a new one is installed, but before installation clean everything out and lubricate with graphite. The removal of the rear land rover decal in the handle will not allow entrance into the lock to fix this sort of problem. I am now thinking of getting rid of the Disco in exchange for a defender - someone tell me they are more robust....please

I think this problem is more widespread amongst Disco IIs than you might think. My Disco rear door lock has seized on three seperate occasions - up the Gregory River, on the Oodnadatta Track and just around town for no apparent reason (although after a dusty weekend away). Dust ingress is the diret cause, and it can be a real nusianced with your cargo barrier installed and all of your gear in the back!

I have followed this up with several dealers and with Landrover Australia. They have admitted that the dust sealing on the rear door lock mechanism 'does not work' on good old Ausssie bulldust, although apparently it keeps the dust of the English midlands out a treat.... The best advice I have received is the rear badge 'lever off' trick and silicon spray as you 'cycle' the lock mechanism via the key remote. This works. The use of WD40 is not recommended as it creates a bigger mess and clogs the whole works up with nice greasy bulldusty muddy stuff.

I have asked about other ways of sealing the lock, none have been proven practical. Oh well, another idiosyncrastic Landy trait to add to the list that my Disco has.
