    Range Rover using coolant

A mate has a 1997 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 he recently purchased and it has started using coolant! It goes through approximately half a litre in about 100 kilometers of city/town driving, there are not any obvious coolant leaks. Are there any common problems that this may be or is it most likely something sinister like a head gasket. I think the vehicle has about 200 thousand kilometers on the clock. He is putting in for a service and check up at the end of the week, however he would like an idea on what may be the issue.

    Thanks and cheers,
    Mick.

    Maybe a 4.6.

Is the history of the engine known? If it's overheated at any stage, it could have a dropped liner causing a head gasket leak. Big dollars to repair properly. If it's been doing it since he bought it, I would suggest the PO may have known what was going on and offloaded while he could.

    Hope I'm wrong though...

    That's what he told me!
I am not familiar with RR engines capacities.

    Cheers, Mick.

    Hi,
Just before slashing my wrists thinking a HG failure, I checked all hoses one last time. A V8 4.0.

I had been using small amounts of coolant for months and could find no evidence of a leak. Fearing the worst, one Sunday morning after looking at V8 rebuild kits online, decided to check everything again.

I found the leak, hidden away, a small hose join was the offender, quietly weeping away but leaving no evidence.

Worth a shot, it made my day and despite working in tropical conditions, never used a drop after the hose change.

    Good luck

    Cheers, Jerry

Mick, pull the plugs and if you have access to an endoscope, look at each of the piston crowns.

One without carbon is a sure sign of water getting into the cylinder, possibly from a slipped liner that is allowing water to pass up between the liner and the block from a crack in the block. Look particularly at the middle 4 cylinders.

To be certain, you'll need more tests.

Another is coolant loss from heater O rings, cracked heater matrix/core .

Since you mention 100km city/town driving i imagine you would mean over a week or more ?

    Good point, Peter.

To check for heater O-ring or cracked hearer core connections, fold a sheet of paper towel and site it under the RH footwell airduct. If, after a few days, you see green coolant stains, then your mate is losing coolant there.

The airduct is shown here: Heater Core O-Ring Replacement

    All good!
Turned out to be a leaking pipe between the radiator and the header tank.
The owner is a very happy man!
